Could someone tell me why a 1896 marriage certificate, where the bride was (allegedly) divorced from her first husband, would show her status as "single" rather than "divorced"? The certs I have for other marriages state the marrying persons as either bachelor/spinster or widower/widow and yet this certificate has both parties as "single". The bride was marrying a Surgeon (MRCS), so perhaps it was for discretional purposes. The first husband was a draper.
The marriage was registered at Ormskirk, Lancashire. Also is there a register for divorces in 1896?
any suggestions appreciated.
