*as for occupation, one of these looks like a typo.
** on both census, this child is described as son - I think 'Alice' is a typo, perhaps Alex?
***See image at bottom of page.
****You'll be able to get the original document for this from ScotlandsPeople (SP) - http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (see my next post re costs)

Promise, you'll like all of these!

From SP, there is no death for a Margaret Lander.
However, if you search for Margaret Lauder, maiden name Mulholland, born 1828 (see image), I'm pretty sure this will be her.

The same applies to James, nothing under Lander.
If you use Lauder, there is only 1 appropriate result.  Use 1824 as birth year - birth year can be out depending whether person died before or after birthday or the person that registers death is unsure of exact age.

If I'm right, and these are the correct records, it'll give you both sets of parents, helping you to get a further generation back.

I wouldn't normally recommend being as specific as this with searches but in this case, I've narrowed it down for you.

SP credits cost 6GBP for 30 credits.
It will cost you 18 credits to obtain these 2 documents and the marriage mentioned in previous post.

If you go to AncestralScotland* and register, you'll get an email giving you a voucher for 10 free credits.
* http://www.ancestralscotland.com/signup/register/
If both of you register using different email addresses, you'll both get a voucher, enough to get all 3 records for nothing!

Only one of you needs to register on SP - you can input both vouchers, one after the other on the same account.  I've checked directly with ScotlandsPeople that it is OK to do this and they replied saying yes.

I hope all this is clear but let me know if you want me to clarify.

Something I wrote down but forgot to mention in previous post.

If you do as I've suggested below, you will have 2 credits left.

You could use 1 to search for every Lander birth in Scotland from 1553 to 1854, there are only 25.  The 1 credit will give you the full list of all 25 of them, including date of birth, forename, parents names, sex, parish and county.  A useful index to help you take the line further back.

Below is what we have received from someone else previously but I'm not really convinced that they haven't just drawn a long bow.

The only thing I really do know that is correct is this:
James LANDER (father, James LANDER) married Alice SMITH (father, George SMITH) in India in 1877

Alice Catherine LANDER born 13 April 1879; India Office Ecclesiastical Returns, Bengal Presidency; Parents James LANDER and Alice

Unfortunately neither of the certificates tells you much.

I can find no death for James but know that by the time his son was married he was dead.  There is a death certificate for Alice.
I have also found Alice living with her mother (1901) Census and four children in Maryhill.  There are two daughters who were previously unknown to us and according to the Census they were born in Ireland.

Marriage: James LAUDER [sic] married Catherine ROY in Glasgow on 17/12/1837

Hi again,
Just going over some old posts I had kept a note of.
Are you any further on with this?
Did you get the records I suggested in reply #2?
