Hi all

A bit of local knowledge if possible, the above gentleman married Ellen Smoothy and they settled in Great Tey where he worked as a carpenter and joiner. In 1891 they move to St Mary at Walls and  Walter became a Cycle Maker and General Agent. in the 1901 census he and family are living at 26 Crouch Road, St MAry at the Walls, Colchester and he is an employer running a cycle manufactury and agency.

Further research ahs shown that he wrote a book or pamphlet in 1875 called From Paris to Vienna on a Bicycle, there is a copy in the Bodleian Library!

Can anyone give me any more information about his factory (from home) or the industry in Essex at the time, I am coming up blank everywhere - can't wait for the 1911 census.

Thank you

Sandra
