One last try... can anyone help?
« on: Tuesday 06 January 09 16:45 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I've been searching for some ancestors of mine in the 1901 census for some time now, and am about to give up as I've never got any closer.

I decided to give it one final shot on here to see if anyone has any fresh ideas...

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,112735.0.html

I've posted about it before (see above) but thought I'd do a new post to try and make it less confusing!

George John Allan Harper (b. 1858) married Susannah Maria Skinner (b. 1868) in 1895. Before 1901 they had a daughter
 - Hilda, b. 1899 at Portsea
 - and possibly a son, George.
All their other children were born after 1901 and all at Portsmouth.

George JA Harper had been married previously, to Mary Derry (1859-1892). They had two children:

 - William Bailey A Harper b. 1879 at Whitechapel
 - Annie Harper b. 1891 at Whitechapel

Susannah's father had died when she was young, and her mother remarried to Edward George Gray. He and their daughter, Emily (b. 1873) were witnesses at George and Susannah's wedding.

I cannot find ANY of them in 1901, Skinner, Harper (from either marriage) or Gray! I've searched for family members, for every imaginable combination if names, have gone through each page of the census in Alverstoke incase they were mistranscribed... all with nothing.

To make it even more confusing, I have the death cert for George Harper, which gives his name as 'George Harper - otherwise Wilson'. My grandad remembers his aunts being called the 'Wilson girls' but even with this twist on the names I've had no joy.

I'm ready to give up on this - I find it hard to believe all 3 familes were missed off and I also don't think thay were out of the country but I've run out of ideas!

If anyone has any bright ideas then I'd love to hear them!

Sorry it's so rambling.  :o

Rachel, have you looked at the 1901 census for St. Maurice, Hampshire ?  RG13/1081  Folio: 109  Page: 25 ?

There's a Hilda Harper living with grandparents.  Not quite the right age, though.

RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

There does seem to be a George Wilson, 42, tailor, b. London, in the 1901 census (at least, on http://www.1901censusonline.com/)
I think possibly he has a daughter Hilda aged 1 as well (at least, I'm guessing so from the index), and a son William aged 21 b. London.

His wife seems to for some reason be listed as Lily.  Can someone pull the full info for this family?

Hiya,

Thanks for the replies - Nick I've looked at that one in the past but think the mother's name is Elizabeth so discounted it.

jorose - I had also ignored the one you have found due to the mothers name, however looking at it more closely I think it could be a real possiblity. Lily is born in Woolwich, same as Susannah. The only other thing that's throwing me on it is the two other children, Harry and Lilian. I don't know why they would never have been mentioned in the family! I thought it might help having some new eyes on it - I'd got myself completely bogged down.

I'm going to try looking into this...

although any ideas of why they'd be changing forenames and surnames would be appreciated!  ;)

Although there are discrepancies, there are also a lot of tie-ups in this entry, and I think it's well worth considering.

I have got several examples of apparently illogical surname and christian name changes between censuses, so don't rule anything out!

I can't find a Lilian Wilson born Portsmouth at the appropriate time, but there is a Lilian May Harper, born 3rd quarter 1897, Portsea 2b, 526.

Also, Henry John A. Harper, born 3rd quarter 1892, Portsea, 2b 483  :D  :D

I have sometimes seen Lily used as a variant of or pet name for Susannah, presumably on the basis that Susannah is Hebrew for "lily".

Wooo it's all falling into place! Thank you everyone - as for Lily being a pet name, I would never in a million years have guessed that. Thanks!
