Look up please for Atcham
« on: Wednesday 07 January 09 12:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if it is possible for a kindly soul who may have access to the PR's of Atcham to look up the following:-

Birth in Sept quarter of 1900 of Lilian Catherine Hughes
Marriage in September quarter of 1904 of Edward Albert Hughes to either Florence Ann Bliss or Alice Povey

I'm searching for an illegimate daughter (Lilian Catherine) belonging to the Hughes family who Ii know was born in 1900 ~ I have found her grave and her surname at her death in 1968 was Seller.  Searched for a possible marraige with no definate success and the above are possible matches to her and her brother Edward ~ I'm thinking along the lines of her actually perhaps being the illegimate daughter of Edward and brought up as a sister to his siblings............  I believe there was a kind of home in Atcham for unmarried mothers, but I'm not sure.  If anyone could help me it would be fanastic and if these hunches turn out to be true I can then order the relevant GRO certs.

Many thanks again
Margaret

Hi Margaret,

You would need to know the name of the church to search Parish Registers; the Atcham registration district includes 50+ towns/villages.

If the marriage took place in a Register Office then those registers are not available for searching.

Nanny Jan

Thank you for that ~ I thought that Atcham was a parish itself rather than a district, hey ho!!!!

Have you found her on the 1901 census - it would narrow down her birthplace if nothing else  :)  Unfortunately I don't have access atm  :'(

Atcham is one of the 50+ places covered by the Atcham registration district, so the event could have taken place there.   :-\

A copy of the certificate will show exactly where the birth or marriage took place.

Atcham is against the birth record on freeBMD, as I can't see the 1901 census I don't know if it says Atcham there too.

Margaret hasn't said whether it says Atcham on the census return but I presume from your answer that it does.

I think Margaret has just used FreeBMD for her information as she does not mention any census findings.

Hi both

There unfortunatley is no mention on the 1901 census of Lilian.
I've looked under any obvious mispelling etc (I've been doing family research for some years now, even tracing one side of the family back to 1500's ~  so am used to finding all sorts of strange spelling).  Another thought is that she could have been adopted by another family and later reunited with her "real" family.  Think I might just bite the bullet and order the birth cert.

Thanks for you thoughts, ver much appreciated

Margaret

I believe there was a kind of home in Atcham for unmarried mothers, but I'm not sure.

Hi Margaret,

Probably Atcham Union Workhouse at Cross Houses which is in the parish of Berrington.
So this parish would be a good place to look for the birth of Lillian Catherine; there are quite a number of Illegitimate births from the workhouse registered in the Berrington records.

Regards,
Maurice
