Which Elizabeth Taylor ?
« on: Wednesday 09 February 05 12:54 GMT (UK) »
My ggggrandmother was Elizabeth Taylor and the 1851 Census shows she
was born 1804 at Alvechurch Worcestershire.
I have looked at the LDS IGI and there are three Elizabeth Taylors shown
at Alvechurch in 1804.
Parents could be William/Sarah, Thomas/ Phoebe, or Joseph/Ann.
How on earth can I find which were the right parents.
Even the naming pattern used then doesn't help a great deal.
Elizabeth married Joseph Rabone who I believe was the son of Samuel and Mary.
Their children were
1. Thomas
2.Joseph
3.John
4.Elizabeth
5.Mary
6.Ruth
7.William

Would really appreciate any help or suggestions

Hi Sandra

Firstly, I would investigate a couple of years either side of 1804 also so you may end up with more than three possible candidates.

It's probably a case of investigating all 3 families to get a full picture of each ie. the 3 marriages of the parents and then the baptisms of all their children.

Investigate who all the children married - that means getting the witnesses and original signatures from the register if you can.  Compare them and see if you can find any clues there.

Investigate burials to see if any of the Elizabeth's died young.

Try and find out whether any of the parents left wills which may name their children.

Are there any surviving gravestones or inscriptions that may list family details?

Are there any clues on your Elizabeth's marriage?  Were the witnesses relatives?

Have you got your Elizabeth in all the available census?

It's not going to be easy but it may be possible.

Best wishes

Thanks Casalguidi,

As you say it's not going to be easy !
Firstly can't see any more Elizabeth Taylor's in Alvechurch around that date.

I can't even find the marriage of Joseph Rabone and Elizabeth Taylor, their son John is my gg grandfather, and I can't yet find record of his birth c 1835.
To get Elizabeth's maiden name I sent for the birth certificate of younger child Ruth born in 1843.
Elizabeth died in 1855 so the only Census record I have is the 1851 in Aston,
Birmingham.

So far all my research has been done through the computer, so don't even know where to go to try and find marriage records as they're not on the LDS
IGI index.
My Joseph Rabone and his sons were all boatmen on the canals so can't imagine there were any wills - would I find that on Ancestry.com

Think I'm going to have to put on the back boiler for a while and concentrate on other parts of the family.
Many thanks
Sandra

Hi
I would echo Casalguidi's advise about investigating deaths 1804 onwards for Elizabeth Taylors (1837online is website for complete indexes. Remember freeBMD, ancestry, LDS  etc are not complete) to rule out any of the 3 possibles that died before 1851.
I would recommend that as your first move!

All the best
