It looks like either Schasten or Schaften, though I can't make Google come up with anything for either of those as a place name.

It does look like Shaften to me too - but could it have been spelt wrong....?  There is somewhere called Scheften

I have just been playing on Multimap, looking for possible options and I think Milly could well be right with Scheften.

i think a mistranscription is probably the reason..... i found a record of his naturalisation papers on the natioal archives site.
I suppose the best thing would be to get hold of those which hopefully would ecord his village of birth and not just germany.
