1851 Census Lookup - HUMPHREYS
« on: Wednesday 09 February 05 16:20 GMT (UK) »
Hello and thank you for this look up offer.

I am looking for information on the household for:

Miriam Humphreys - Born 1845/1846 in Whittington, Salop.

I have found her in the 1881 Census (named meriom) at which point she is married and living in Selattyn, Salop. But I guess that she didn't move there until she was married.

I would like to know her parents, brothers and sisters etc

Many thanks,

Brian Humphreys.
Humphreys and related family (Ellis, Ward, Edwards etc) mostly around the Oswestry area with some concentrations around Telford, Sheffield, and when I can find the connection - Aldershot.

Many thanks Tara, this is exactly her.

Harry Humphreys is her son and my Great Grandad, Miriam is my G G Granmother. You will notice that she is an unmarried mum at this time which is going to make tracing the family line interesting.  ??? Also our surname has derived from the maternal line at this point in history.

I look forward to hearing anything you can find in the other census.

Oh yes - did the census give an address for the household at all?

Many thanks,

Brian Humphreys

aah yes forgot to write the address in  :o, it is Top Street - no numbers are given.

My g-g grandfather also has no father recorded on his birth certificate and uses his mother's maiden name (Smith!!) until she marries and he takes his step-fathers surname. It is a a pity really because from there back there is only 1 line of research  :'(

Hi Brian

here they are

Thomas 40 shoemaker born Oswestry
Mary 40 born Oswestry
Hannah 10
William 8
Miriam 5
Charles 3
Thomas 8 months

All kids born Whittington

Civil Parish: Whittington  HO107/1993

The address column of shropshire 1851 census is cut off as it is too big to be properly scanned (or something like that) and get place of birth in, so all i can see of the address is "k st" - so not in top street like in 1871.

There were a few other Humphreys around also born Oswestry, if you would like these let me know.

enjoy

One last thing Tara if I may,

Your note from the 1871 census shows Mary at 68 yrs old (DOB 1803 ish)
but the 1851 census shows Mary at 40 yrs old (DOB 1811 ish).

Is it just that the zero or eight are difficult to read, and do you have any clue as to which one is correct.

Many thanks, and I'll try not to bother you again.

Brian Humphreys.  :)

Hi Brian

not a bother  :D

The 1871 is clearly age 68, the 1851 is a bit faded and the top part of the number is not very visible - i guess why i thought it was a 0. Using better zoom i'd say her age is 45 - doesn't really match with the 68 on the 1871 census though  ???

There is this death on freebmd:
Deaths Dec 1873
Humphreys  Mary  69  Oswestry  6a 476

good luck
