Bonjour Marie, and welcome to RootsChat  :)

I have searched on Free BMD 1865-1870 and in that period and I can only find one Thomas Nuttall listed as born in Salford.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

March quarter 1870
Thomas NUTTALL 8d 36

There are other Thomas Nuttalls born 1868 in districts  nearby ie. Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, but none born in Salford.

Madpants - grr, was just about to post that!

Marie,  Ashton under Lyne is about 10 km east of Manchester, Salford is 2km north.
Maybe the person who registered Thomas's death didn't know where he had been born and just guessed or just assumed he had been born where he had been brought up.
Have you found the birth registration of Thomas's sibling?

In the whole country (assuming the DOB is correct on the death cert) there is one Thomas NUTTALL born that quarter.  (Discounting the Thomas Henry)

Thomas NUTTALL
March Q 1868
Oldham 8d 558

I don't know the Manchester area too well but I don't think it's a million miles from Salford

Oldham is fairly close to Ashton under Lyne.

Also, Marie, on the 1871 and 1881 censuses, what is thomas's place of birth?

The Thomas NUTTALL born 1868 Oldham is with his parents Edward and Margaret in 1881, although I haven't spotted him in 1871 yet.

Thomas, son of John and Hannah, is listed as born in Salford in 1871, and Manchester (if the farm servant is the correct one) in 1881.

There are registrations at the right times for the births of Thomas' siblings Charlotte and Alfred in Salford.

Bizarre....
