1851 census please Mansfield
« on: Monday 12 January 09 13:14 GMT (UK) »
I have on the 1841 census in Mansfield, Samuel HEMPSHALE with wife Margaret and daughter Hannah 13. (born approx 1828)

By 1851 he is married to Mary (Barker) with John and infant, under HEMSEED (marriage reg- HEMPSEED 1847)

Margaret HEMSWELL died in 1846

Are you following the surname variations?  They're a bu***r to find!

In Sept Q Mansfield reg district Hannah HEMSON (that's a new one on me)
marries either

Benjamin FLINT
James Matthew MARSHALL
John WATERFIELD

would it be possible to find her on the 1851 census please, I cannot find any record of her birth or Sam and Marg's marriage, if there is a place of birth on the 51 it would be very helpful, thank you  ;D

Can't see a Hannah Flint,  Marshall or Waterfield b. 1828 Notts on the 1851 census

Looked for a Benjamin Flint and found this possible one:

living West Hallam Derbyshire
Benjamin Flint     29  Coal Miner  b. West Hallam Derbyshire
Ann            "     23     " wife                 "
 HO107/2141  Folio  430  Page 37

but as Hannah was born Notts according to 1841 not sure about that, can't see an Ann Hemson in 1841 living W.Hallam though

Still looking  ;D

Not so very wonderful -  Mum44 has been looking too, and we can't find them in 1851, should have daughter Mary Ann aged 2......

must be badly indexed, maybe someone with a sub to a different site may be able to spot them.

Hello……  :)

I have checked out the NFHS indexes and come up with these…..

Marriage - Mansfield St Peter
Benjamin FLINT & Hannah HENSON – 3rd September 1848

Another variation on the spelling…. I can check parents & witnesses on the marriage entry next time I am at the library if it will help?

Baptism’s - Mansfield St Peter – parents Benjamin & Hannah Flint
Mary Ann Flint – 16th March 1849, occupation Factory Hand, abode Pleasley Hill
Hannah Flint – 31st December 1852, occupation Factoryman, abode Albert St.

Baptism Mansfield Woodhouse - parents Benjamin & Hannah Flint
George Flint – 8th February 1857, Mansfield Woodhouse, occupation Mule spinner.

Now the tricky one…the 1851, like Barbara and Mum44 I couldn’t find them but the Nottinghamshire family history society saves the day…..resorted back to my old census disks and trawled the ’51 name index for all the Flint’s, even looking on the NFHS image it is not great, you might have to download and play about with the image to see it better.

1851 - HO107/2123/92/22 – Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire.

The image is so poor I don’t think A******y has many of the names correct so not a hope in finding them! If you stand on your head and squint you might make them out….  ;D It is the family at the bottom of the page and you can just make out Benjamin’s birthplace is Papplewick.

Hope it is of some use
Sheila.

Wow thank you Sheila for doing all that work ;D  The parents and witnesses would be fabulous thank you  :)

On those indexes would you have Kneesall PR's?  The IGI jumps from 1808 to 1813 with their coverage and I'm trying to find the birth of Hannah's father Samuel Hempsal about 1811, mother Mary (I know he was illigitimate but have not found the bap)

I also need the marriage of Samuel and Margaret ?? I presume it's Mansfield as that is where they were living but honestly it could be anywhere  ::)

I did look for the marriage on NFHS index but it isn’t there and unfortunately the baptisms for Kneesall have not been transcribed yet but when I have a look for the marriage info I will try and find time to look for the baptism at Kneesall…..so fingers crossed it will be there.

Hi,
Well done, Sheila for finding that census. Such a faded page, and indexed as surname ELBERT and forenames Henry 25, Hamp 21, Mark 2 and Maria 12 (which I think should be 1 or maybe 2) so none remotely resembling the correct ones.

Madpants, do you need later census for Benjamin & Hannah?
