A Long Shot!
« on: Tuesday 13 January 09 16:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

an ancestor- James Putland, who had a small holding of seven acres - lived in 1861 in the Sussex village of Jevington in a property known as 'ASH LINK'.

My [minimal] knowledge of census' suggests that village properties were not specifically identified unless of substance so may be this was largish house

Has anyone any knowledge of this house or where, perhaps, I could search further??

Many thanks as always
best regards
Tony

Could it be the name of the farm ?

sometimes in villages names were given to cottages which came with the farms

One of my ancetors lived in Allgrave hall -and his son lived in the Dumbles

Allgrave hall (still standing) was a small farmhouse and the Dumbles ws a very small cottage opposite.

so don't be disappointed if it is not a property of substance

Hi Tony

If you go to Old Maps http://www.old-maps.co.uk/IndexMapPage2.aspx and search on Jevington you will see the area Su is talking about north of Jevington.

There is a piece of woodland called the Ash, I have walked through it.  There is a chalk pit and a farm on the top of a very steep hill called Ash.

Thank you very much.

Suz...My [wifes] folk were not wealthy landowners so I didn't expect a large property. A more humble abode than that on the link you kindly found I would think.

Kerry....thanks for the map link.

Thanks to you both I now have a better 'feel' for the area

best regards

I just thought the acreage was about right -census states farmer of 7 acres -this farm has 5

Maybe the farmhouse as been added to over the years?

Also on the census addresses on previous and next page are given as "Filching"
