Rothery / Robinson
« on: Wednesday 14 January 09 15:18 GMT (UK) »
Where would I find records of Joseph Rothery imprisoned for cattle rustling.
He lived in Park House Farm Harrington and seemed to be  an established family of 64 acres
Some how he escaped and brought all the family with him to Wales and changed all their names to Robinson It was before 1901 and after 1891

Hi Jennyrob

If he was actually charged with the crime and it went to court, then there should be a court record.  Quarter Sessions?  I don't know if every last record survives but there seem to records in one form or another in the record office.

Many sessions will be recorded in great detail in the local papers too.  They're harder to search without a pretty precise date though.

Many of the records are in the Cumbria Record Office Head Office at Carlisle Castle, but I'm not sure if some for West Cumbria will be in Whitehaven.

There are local papers in the record offices and also films of them in the Local Studies Library in the  Lanes in Carlisle

You could try emailing the record Office and ask what is available at that date and whether it is indexed.

Best wishes
