Help required with 1911 census info please...
« on: Thursday 15 January 09 10:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

First of all i'll try and fill you in how and where i am stuck with information then i'll explain the 1911 census info that has confused me.

This element of FH that i'm currently working on is on my wife's side and it would seem this line is all based around Lancashire (mainly Liverpool in recent years) and possibly Ireland.

My wife's grandfather was called Sidney (or Sydney) James Gilligan and was born on 17/04/1922.  I am told that his parents were Joseph Gilligan (and Minnie Pugh Gilligan (no idea where the Pugh comes from).  I have ordered Sidney's buirth cert to confirm this but as yet have not received it.

Upon checking both ancestry and other info I keep arriving back at a couple from Barrow-In-Furness (Lancashire) of the same names born and married in Barrow.

The info i'm stuck / need help with is:

- anything to link Sidney with parents (although birth cert will hopefully confirm this and is due any day)
- on the 1911 census there is a Joseph (occupation 'Boiler Rivetter') and Minnie in Barrow with 3 children, Joseph (born in Barrow & at school), and then 2 other children Minnie and Robert.  Now for these children in the 'where born' column it states 'Belfast Resident Ireland' - any ideas what this means?
- anything else i've not thought of?

Many thanks in advance of any help received.

Re the children born "Belfast resident Ireland" that would suggest to me that the children were born in Belfast and at  the time of the census were living in Ireland presumeably in Belfast.  It could be and this is just an idea that your wifes great grandmother had the two siblings and left them with family in Ireland, possibly so she could work or may be the family could not afford to have everyone living together?

The 1911 Irish census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie now has Antrim online so you could check for the children and see if they are listed there.

Good luck
