Mill End, Waterfoot, Rossendale
« on: Thursday 15 January 09 16:16 GMT (UK) »
Long story, but i'm trying to locate Mill End in Waterfoot. I believe it is now part of Burnley Road East. It no longer seems to exist. Although there is a Mill Called 'Mill End Mill'

Does anyone know if this is on a map that I can view easily?

I'm trying to trace the history of my old house in the census records and have become stuck in 1891 already!

Any help is appreciated as I'm going around in circles.

Tracey

Hi Tracey,

You can view the old maps on www.old-maps.co.uk .  Click on Maps and type in Waterfoot.  Choose Lancashire.  Mill End is above Waterfoot and nearer Newchurch.  You might have to pan north a couple of times and then zoom in.  It is actually clearer on the 1851 map.

Thats odd.... my house isn't on the 1841 map.... I had a set of deeds from 1798!?!

I'm going to have to investigate further.

It looks like I am safe presuming the numbers extend north from New Mills up what is now Burnley Road East, its a shame it has changed as it looks like I'm not going to be able to acxtually pinpoint my house from 1891 backwards :(

Thanks for the map link :)

Hi,

As you have the deeds to the property it may be easier to track forwards rather than backwards (or not :-\).  Unfortunately the houses at Mill End were not numbered in the early census - thirty four separate families living there in the 1851 census.

You could try contacting the helpful staff at the Local Studies department of Rawtenstall Library.

Good luck,
Mo
