Act Of Kindess, Mount Royal Cem,Montreal
« on: Saturday 17 January 09 09:44 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone. I am new to posting on this site but already I have experienced fantastic support from one of your members who has kindly suggested a posting here.
Can someone help please?
Ref:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=353692.new

I know that my Great Aunty, Florence Mabel Connor is buried at the Mount Royal Cemetery,Montreal.
I want to trace living relatives who may still be attending the grave, hopefully, my fathers' cousins, who were twins.

Having hit a brick wall, I am ever hopeful, that a member may be willing to print off a letter to the family and leave it at the headstone, subject to approval from the Cemetery.

I do have the grave number.

I would welcome any support or suggestions from your members please, especially those in the Montreal area.

Best wishes and many thanks,

Tracey, Liverpool, UK

What your suggesting is a bit of a long shot, in my experience many graves are only attended to on an annual basis and I suspect leaving a note on a grave would not be very efficient. I would suggest other avenues would be to check phone books in the area as I assume you know the name/s of those you are seeking. Another option which I have tried myself in Canada, to no effect I must admit, is to write to the local newspapers requesting contact.

Regretfully if those you wish to contact don't want to be contacted then you are no further forward.

I hope this helps, I am sure there are others who will be able to offer some more positive advice than me.

If anyone would like to read the original thread and see the effort she has put into trying to contact the living relatives I know that if you have any other suggestions ozziemrs would be more than willing to try them.

I couldn't think of any......but possibly someone else will.

It may be a bit of a long shot....but I think it is a very creative idea.  I visit my parents graves far more often than twice a year and if it takes six months for them to see it at least there is a possibility she will get a response.

Great job on the post aussiemrs !!!!

Here is a link to the directories for Montreal. Unfortunately, it only goes to 1999. (But at least you can see if any remained in Montreal itself.) They could however, have moved to communities around the Montreal area. When you tried the telephone listings, did you just try Montreal? If so, you should try other areas of Quebec and Eastern Ontario.

You should ask the cemetery, if they might be willing to get in touch with the family that own the plot, provided someone still holds the title to it. If the title is no longer held, you could ask the name of the last family that did. (They may not, but it doesn't hurt to ask).  If you have no response from them, or from anyone on Rootschat that may live near there, you could also try RAOGK.

http://www.raogk.org/quebec.htm

Also, instead of phoning, you should try writing, (giving all the information you have on the family that immigrated), as they might remember something, if they have the time to really think about it.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck!

I just wanted to end my evening with a note of thanks to you all for your suggestions and advice.

I have written to Mount Royal to see if they can help further, perhaps there is an account for maintaining the grave etc, so hopefully, they may give me more guidance.

With reference to Lovells, despite my poor French, I had previously sourced this site and it confirmed my fathers note advising of their address.   Up to 1980 they lived in Hanover Road, but in the listing for 1982, it changed to Hanover Church where Mabel Connor was listed. From there however, the trail disappeared.

I looked at many Connors all around various districts of Montreal via 411 and phoned all those that were listed. However, on of the twins, Maureen, is likely to have married, which does not help!!!

I had also looked at maps and contacted libraries about the district changes around this time, but still no results.

The only thing I have noted tonight is that the Hanover Church listings in Lovells had Mount Royal mentioned, suggesting to me, with Florence being laid to rest there, they probably stayed local to the area, at least upto 1982. Gosh, but that was over 27 years ago!

One last question please.  Are there BMD records in Canada where you can research the maiden name of the bride to highlight the husbands name?

I quit on this project about 9months ago but something deep down will not allow to give up forever.
There will have to be a point where I believe and trust in myself that  I have exhausted every avenue!

Thank you so very much for your kind support.

Tracey

Here is a link explaining where to search for the marriage index in Quebec.
