Bangor Lookup - Robert and Margaret Jones and son John
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 05:08 GMT (UK) »
Could someone please look up marriage of Robert Jones and Margaret Evans in the Bangor registry.  Also birth of son John Robert (or Roberts) Jones, born c1826.  The son John immigrated to Australia sometime before 1854.  I have several different places of birth for John, taken from birth certificates of his children in Australia.  One records his place of birth as Clynnog, Angleshire, another Caernarvonshire, Norrth wales, and yet another has recorded Bangor.

I have found Robert and Margaret Jones in the 1841 Wales Census with 3 children John (16) Robert (10) and Margaret (5) however I am not sure if these are the same people I'm researching.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Hi LyndyLoo and welcome to Roots Chat
Pallets marriage records show a Robert Jones married a Margaret Evans in 1800 (no other details)
I can only find one record for a birth of a John in 1826 in Clynnog but the mothers name is Mary so it may well be that the birth was in Bangor. Will look tomorrow evening unless someone else beats me to it.

Hello WelshGen,

Thank you so much for the prompt reply.  John Robert Jones recorded Bangor as his place of birth on several of his Australian-born children so maybe the record is held there - here's hoping.   does Bangor also hold shipping records?  I'm wondering if John Robert Jones, born 1826 immigrated from there to Australia - no year known, just that it was before 1854, when he married in Victoria.

I really appreciative of your help - Jones is sure a big nae to be researching, and even more so from "across the waves".

kind regards
Lynda Loo

I've gone through the Bangor part of the 1841 census and apart from the family you have found can only find one other John Jones about the right age and he was a pupil at Friars School which I am pretty sure was residential so there are no relatives attached. There are a few other John Jones but living and working for families other than Jones surname.
The port at Bangor was mainly for shipping slate and other goods, emmigrants from North Wales would more than likely have left from Liverpool.

There are many websites that cover ships in the UK, just use your browser to find them.

Hello WelshGen,

Thank you for looking up the family in the 1841 Census - are you able to find any record of them in the 1851 Census?

Thanks a loy

Hello,  I have this couple in my family tree.  Robert Jones married Margaret Evans.  They had a son John Jones of which I do not believe moved to Australia because he married Elizabeth Williams.  They had a son John Jones who married Elizabeth Bolton and another son David Jones.  The John Jones above had a son John Jones 1873-1945 who married Hannah Allen.  They immigrated to Canada and this is where my family is now.  If this Robert Jones and Margaret are who you are looking for I can take the family back centuries through the Evans line.  Let me know if you are interested.
Have a great day.  :)

Hi Puffpatty,

From you reply I assume the Robert Jones and Margaret Evans in the 1841 census are the couple you refer to in your Evans tree?  Did they marry in 1827 and live at Tyn Lon Lladdeusant at the time of the census?  If so it will confirm I'm on the wrong trail with this couple.  My Robert and Margaret had a son named John Robert (circa 1826) and he always used both Christian names (John Robert) in Australian documentation.  Perhaps he had a brother John so used the two names to differentiate? Time will tell (I hope).

John Robert Jones occupation was recorded as Carpenter on his Australian marriage certificate.  It records his birth place as Clynnog, Wales, and parents as Robert Jones (farmer) and Margaret Evans.

cheers
