Church Family of Desertoghill
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 19:20 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the Church family of Desertoghill parish between Garvagh and Kilrea and found the following marriage on the Emerald Ancestors website:-

Record Type Civil Marriage
Date of Marriage 12 Dec 1905
Groom Name james CHURCH
Bride Name mary MCCOOKE
Church Desertoghill Church of Ireland
Parish Desertoghill
Civil District Coleraine
County Londonderry

I suspect the groom is this man listed in the 1901 census

Grove DED (MIC/354/5/8) Moyletratoy Townland, Property 6
James Church   Head   46   R&W   Farmer   Widower   CoI

but cannot fit him into my tree.

Can anyone please help identify his father or other family members.

Thanks

Hi
Griffith's gives Stephen Church renting a house, barns etc and almost 84 acres of land in Moyletra Toy from James Church and John Church renting a house, barns etc, and 13 acres of land in Moyletra Toy from James Church. James held a lot of land in this townland but did not live there. I think that either Stephen or John may be the father.

Possibly the Stephen Church (1814-1874) who had a son James (1848-aft.1918) who went to U.S. before 1900.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks Kingskerswell and Aghadowey

James, who was the freeholder of Moyletratoy, lived in Oatlands House, Myroe, near Limavady and was the son of John Church of The Grove, Moyletratoy.  The freehold of the entire townland was purchased by the Church family in 1629, together with the leases for the neighbouring townlands of Dullaghy and Lisachrin from the Mercer's Company.

Stephen was James's land agent and lived in the Grove House until his murder on Boxing Day 1874, after which his family all emigrated to Texas.  I'm not certain how he is related to James but think he MAY well be the son of Stephen Church and Anne Orr and therefore James' first cousin through both his mother and father (John Church married Elizabeth Orr).

John who occupied the smaller farm in Griffith is a bit of a mystery - or should I say even more of a mystery - and could well be the man.  I also wonder if James was living in Grove House as this passed from the Church family into the hands of the McCooke family sometime in the C20th.

Hi,
I am sure that you are aware but there are several interesting wills in the Callendar of Wills on PRONIs website covering some of your Churchs.
