Query occupation
« on: Thursday 10 February 05 15:27 GMT (UK) »
I have a death certificate  which states the occupation as ' Surry man' or that's what it looks like! I've tried to convince myself the 's' is an 'l' so it becomes 'lurry man' i.e. lorry/cart driver, but I'm 90% certain it starts with an 's'.

It's from 1858 in West Yorkshire and , as far as I can be sure, the person in question was an apprentice mason on earlier censuses.

I've tried looking it up on a couple of websites but with no luck. Anyone got any ideas?   ???

Jill.

I've got Lurryman as an occupation for one of mine in Salford - synonymous with lorryman.  Ls and Ss can look very much the same in some florid handwriting.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.
