McGown Family - 4 brothers & a sister - Post 1911 info?
« on: Thursday 22 January 09 21:11 GMT (UK) »
I have found the following siblings, David, Albert, John H, Alexander B and Mary (Minnie) McGown on the 1911 Irish Census.  Summarized as:

House #53 Cedar Ave, Clifton, Belfast #2, Antrim
David McGown 38   (b 1872 Liverpool) Bookeeper for Stockbroker
Charlotte 38    (b 1872 Liverpool)
Charlotte (D) 12   (b 1899 Liverpool)
Mary 8   (b 1903 Liverpool)
Barbara Grey 6   (b 1905 Liverpool)
James 4    (b 1906 Liverpool)

House #430 Upper Newtownards Rd, (part of) Victoria, Down
Albert McGown 44 (b 1867 Liverpool)  Engineer
Bessie 43 (nee Crosbie)
Mary Douglas 7 (b 1902 Liverpool)

House #28 Cyprus Ave (part of) Pottinger, Down
Alexander B B McGown 32 (b 1878 Liverpool)  Stockbroker
John Holmes McGown 30   (b 1880 Liverpool) Manager Copper Works
Minnie (Mary) McGown 27  (b 1882 Liverpool) (sister of above brothers)

What else I know....
In the 1901 English census David is still living with his family in Liverpool so moved sometime after 1906.  The others were likely already in Belfast by 1901, last census appearance being the 1891 England.

Albert married Bessie Crosbie at Helens Bay Presb. Church, Bangor on 10 Apr 1901.   Minnie McGown married James McConnell at Ballygilbert Presb. Church, Bangor on 23 Jul 1913.  James McConnell is shown as a Gas Collector on the marriage cert. John Holmes McGown married Margaret Kelly at Belmont Presb. Church, Holywood, on 10 Apr 1914.  I believe John H. may have signed the Ulster Covenant as the addresses match (28 Cypress).

From Belfast Directories I believe that Albert McGown may have owned the McGown A & Co. Ltd, (Ulster) Galvanizing Works on Mountpottinger Rd.  The last listing I found was for 1975.

Alexander was the owner of ABB McGown Stockbrokers on Rosemary Street. The last listing being around 1924 when he probably retired.  I suspect David worked for him.

Brothers James, Walter Crawford and George Cameron emigrated to Vancouver Canada.  In 1942 the obituary for George says he is survived by 4 brothers & a sister in Belfast so they are still in the area. (James is my g-gf)

I have been unable to find any further information (deaths, marriages or births) for the above family members and/or their children.  I realize I am close to "living relatives" as far as finding more bmd information and the confidentiality issue this creates.  Any further information or direction as to what I am able to do next would be appreciated.

Many thanks for any insights you can provide.

Regards,
Joellen

Can anyone tell me about the business McGown A & Co. Ltd. Galvanizing Works on Mountpottinger Road. Also called the Ulster Galvanizing Works at one time and listed in a directory from about 1901 to 1975.  I know it must have to do with pipes and might have to do with shipping, but what is a "galvanizing works"?

And just FYI the following site, which is a work in progress, has been very helpful in finding more recent entries (1900's) for the McGown family I have been researching in Ireland.

Thanks,
