Lydia Gowan
« on: Saturday 24 January 09 06:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find info on my great great grand mother Lydia (liddy) Gowan.

I have lots of info on her after she was married but I am trying to find out about her life before she married. Her father was a preacher in Ewell, Surrey, and that she was born in Battle, Sussex in 1807 and that is all I know.

Can anyone help throw some light on this for me please as its driving me insane!! ???

Many thanks

We would all like the answer to that little question, she was my great-great grandmother, My great-grandad was the  2nd youngest son., Charles, or Chorley as he was better known.

Your best option is to go back to his parish and search their records, as they might tell you where he came from originally. As he was a parson he may have come there after being ordained. OR you can try Lambeth Palace records Office. I have always found them helpful, I might do it myself later, but no time at the moment.

Hi Joyce

You must be related to Robert in Bournemouth then? Ellin married twice once to someone Matthews (we don't know his first name) They had 2 children Walter & James and an adopted son James Harrison. Then Ellin married Walter Jeff in 1917 and they had 3 children Sam, Rosa & Dasey. Where did your mum fit in?

Ha ha your comment about squirrels made me laugh I know exactly what you mean, I have 3rd and 4th cousins coming out the woodwork too, isn't it lovely? just for the record we are 1st cousins once removed !

My mother was Sarah Viney, her mother Martha Matthews (chorleys daughter) married (I use the term loosely) Ernest Viney. My mother was the youngest of 5 girls and even though she is now 82 until last year we had only lost one of them!

Thats enough for now wont bog you down with too much data!!

Hi,
I have just found your email, I could have said fleas jumping on a dog!!!!!!!  ;

Yes I am Robert's first cousin. His Dad Walter Dane Matthews and Mum were Half brother and sister. Granny was never married before!  as her marriage certificate stated SPINSTER. Also, as far as we know Johnny Harris was from another relaionship, and was her son, and not adopted son. Mum's full brothers were Samson and James, and her sister was Rosina. Right up to their deaths they all called Mum  Macey and the others were all called by their full names. Aunt Rose died 4 months after Mum in July 1995. The other Jeff side were from Grandad's first marriage. They were Lily Louisa, Patience, Joby,  Eliza and there were one or 2 more. Ther was also a sister Mary, but whether that was another of Granny's we haven't yet proved.

By the was what is your proper name, yep, nosy, that's me. I have needed to be the past year as I am writing a village social history, about where I live now.

Any way I have to get back to my book now, as it is due at the printers the beginning of June.

Hi Lorraine
Where did Phoebe Deakins come from, I haven't had chance to investigate her apart from a quick look, or is she another who came from nowhere. Considering she was our great-grandma we ought to know more than we do.

Just a thought if you have nothing better to do.  ! ! ! !

Hi Joyce

I know alot about Phoebe Deakins, I have investigated her completely and it is a very sad story !!

Get a coffee its a long story  ;D

Phoebe was one of 9 children - Martha (who was the great grand mother of francis brown), Ann, Caroline, Thomas, Phoenix, Stephen, Kitty, Richard (who married Lavinia Bushnell, Sister of Mary Ann Bushnell that married Redshirt)

Their Parents where George Deakins (b.1772 d. 1856) and Elizabeth (sorry dont know surname)

They lived in Buckland Sussex and from what I can find out george had a brother called Richard, who in the 1881 census was living in Reigate poor house, he lived there until he died in 1891.

Thomas (phoebe's father) died when he was 48 and Caroline stayed with her mother most of her life looking after her. I have the family in Buckland until 1843 when they suddenly moved to Croydon, 3 years later they moved to Reigate where both Kitty & Phoebe were born, I think they were born in the poor house there!

www.workhouses.org.uk is a good website for the work houses and you will see Richard as a 72 yo on the 1881  census register.

Good news is that the house that the family lived in at Buckland is still there! I am coming over in December and that is on my list to go and see, maybe you would like to come with me?

Hope it's filled you in a bit?
