BAKER family Bodmin
« on: Saturday 24 January 09 14:53 GMT (UK) »
My Great x4  Grandparents were William & Catherine Baker.

William was born in Plymstock c. 1797
& Catherine (possibly maiden name of Pearce) was born in Plymouth c. 1795

They had at least 3 children:

 Jane b.c. 1825
Thirza Pearce b.c. 1829 Plymouth
Henry b.c. 1834
William b.c. 1837

(I also found paperwork that led me to believe that Henry was 'Henry C. H. Baker' and his brother William was 'William Vivian Baker')

The family moved to BODMIN , Cornwall.

Thirza Pearce Baker went on to marry John Honey of Bodmin, Cornwall in 1848- they are my 3x Great Grandparents,

I would be very interested to know what became of Jane, Henry & William - who did they marry? Did they have children? Where did they live?

I would also be interested if anyone could tell me anything about William Baker's parents/family & that of his wife Catherine (including her maiden name!!).

Many thanks.

Hi James,

I am having trouble locating this family. I see them in Bodmin in 1841 but am not spotting them in 1851 (apart from Thirza now married) Jane of course may have married but I am just having no luck with William or Catherine and the two boys. Do you have any later records of them?

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi James,

MMM I now see William and Catherine are in Bodmin in 1861

There is a death for

Henry Cotty Hodge BAKER Sep 1/4 1852 Bodmin

Henry Hodge BAKER was buried Bodmin Old Cemetery 22 Aug 1822 aged 18 Years

He is buried with his parents

William BAKER 14 May 1871 aged 71 Years
Catherine BAKER 28 Mar 1874 aged 78 Years

Birth also of a Jane Coty H Baker in Sep 1872 Bodmin. She is a boarder in 1881 so unfortunately not being terribly helpful and may have no connection.

Hi

William BAKER was baptised at Plymstock on December 8th 1797. He was born on the 15th October 1797 - the son of William and Elizabeth BAKER.

I'll see if I can find the marriage of William and Elizabeth.

Ive also found the marriage of William BAKER, Senr at Plymstock.

"By Licence, William BAKER and Elizabeth BOWIN - May 18th 1796"

If you'd like me to trace the rest of the BAKER's at Plymstock let me know.

Kris & Graham - thank you so much for your replies - this website never fails to astonish me!!!
Brilliant work, you two - and fascinating to find out a little more about this family, that up until now, I knew so little about!

Kris, I wonder if the Jane Coty H Baker was the daughter of William Hiram Baker & his wife Phoebe ?I wonder how many children they had.

I shall keep searching to try to find out what became of William & Catherine's daughter, Jane - & I shall be interested to try to find out what CATHERINE's maiden name was ... maybe it was Coty (or Cotty) or Hodge ??? I wonder, Kris,  if there are still any gravestones at Bodmin, belonging to these members of the Baker family.

Graham , well done on finding William Baker's baptism & the names of his parents - any help you can give regarding the Baker family would be much appreciated - such as whether or not William Baker (the one born at Plymstock) had any brothers/sisters - & any information on his parents & their ancestors.

I am so very grateful for your help, & can't get over the speed at which you guys have responded with so much information.

Many thanks.
