Did my 3 x g.grandmother have two illegitimate children?
« on: Monday 26 January 09 15:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi

My 3 x g.gran Mary Cocket was known to have an illegitimate child who was born in Holbeach in 1811 called Charles and he is my 2 x g.grandfather.  On his marriage certificate he names a Thomas Tubbs as his father.  However, I have a bastardy bond for a Mary Cocket dated 19 August 1805 in which she names a William Ghent as the father of her expected child.  This child is obviously not Charles as his age on his marriage certificate and on his death certificate are consistent with being born in 1811.

Is there any way of finding out if another Cocket child was born in 1805/06.  There is nothing on IGI.

Many thanks
Lizzie

Which parish did you get the bastardy bond from?   You need to look for a baptism there - assuming the child survived.  Otherwise a burial?

I got the Bastardy Bond from Lincolnshire CC Archives, however, the court was held in Holland, Lincs but the two men named (I presume one was a guarantor for the alleged father) and my 3 x g.gran are all shown as being from Holbeach.

Other than IGI, where nothing is listed under either Cocket or Ghent (Gent) for a possible child, where else should I be looking?  Are there parish registers on the internet, or is it a case of going back to Lincs.CC?

If you can get to Lincoln record office that is much the best bet though you can order the parish register films of most churches to search at your nearest LDS centre.  Holbeach is on the IGI so if nothing shows up in baptisms then it is possible the child did not survive and looking at burials will be helpful.

Thanks Andrea, it looks as though I'll be visiting my nearest LDS then as I am a long way from Lincoln.

Don't know whether or not you'll find this helpful but if you google HECKINGTON GENEALOGY it will take you to a really good webpage and will open up some fascinating places.
When you enter the site you will find a list of Lincolnshire villages and some of the BMD's have been transcribed..it's well worth a visit....happy hunting.  :)
