COMPLETED: Griffith John Petty - Maesteg
« on: Wednesday 28 January 09 22:32 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to confirm the father of Griffith John Petty (born 1897).  Family info suggests he was born near Llangynwyd/Nantyffython/Maesteg.

I have found him on the 1901 Wales census, living with his Grandparents (John/Sarah Petty) in Maesteg.  John & Sarah had 7 children (Mary Ann, Thomas, Rachel, David, Sarah, Maggie & John), so i guess any of them could be one of his parents?

Does anyone have any ideas or access to the relevent records  :)

Thanks

I would suggest (although I have been known to be wrong) that if Griffith was a Petty, and was living with his grandparents (also Petty's), then he must be one of their son's son's (as he carried on the surname).

Should narrow you down to Thomas, David, or John rather than the daughters who presumably would have gotten married.

Unless of course his mother never married....

The birth cert would give you full name of parent/parents, address etc.

Births Mar 1897   Petty  Griffith John    Bridgend  11a 812

Or his marriage cert may give you fathers name, but if born to one of the daughters out of wedlock possible not.

Marriages Mar 1920

Owen  Mary  - Petty  Bridgend  11a 1574
Petty  Griffith J  - Owen  Bridgend  11a 1574

Thanks for the help,

I will send off for the birth certificate to solve the mystery.

Any further info regarding Griffith, from church or MI records would also be interesting :-)

I believe John C Petty's son John married Janet/Janette Evans in Llangynwyd. They sailed to America in approx 1903. Griffith John not listed with them so probably not the son of John - though you would need birth certificate to confirm this.

Thank you everyone for your help.

I have now received the Birth & Marriage certificates for Griffith.

Our suspicions were correct - no father listed.

So i guess we will never know the Father .........

But the mystery of which sibling he belonged to is now solved ........  his Mother is listed as Maggie Petty.
