Police or Military
« on: Friday 30 January 09 14:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I wonder if you could have a look at this photo and suggest whether the chap is military or police, and if he is military which regiment he could be.

Many thanks,

Spider

It's the helmet that makes me think it might have been police

Thank you Failsafe

I posted this picture on the Photo restoration board to get an idea of date, and posted the same query of soldier vs policeman, and they thought soldier!  ;)

Perhaps it was a fancy dress costume..........

It is neither a policeman or fancy dress!!

It a British soldier, probably infantry of around the 1880. The helmet is the blue cloth "home service helmet"

There appears to be a spike on the top of the helmet.

I am undecided as to whether he is a bandsman or not....It may be a music case around his chest, and I am unsure without blowing it up (I'm at work and unable to do such fancy things!!) whether that is a bayonet or a bandsmans sword..

 ;D ;D ;D ;D

What would be handy as we cannot make out the helmet plate, is a close up of his belt buckle!!

 ;) ;)

Thank you very much Scrimnet.  Should I rescan the image at a higher resolution to get a better look at the belt buckle?

Once again, many thanks.

Hello Srimmers
Could this be pre 1880.The reason being the card stock is a Marion Imp Paris which were date coded post 1880
and this doesn't appear here so, between 1874-80 perhaps.

Good idea Scrimnet.  Can I lock my own threads?  Will give it a go and then do some rescanning.

Edited to add - am locking this thread, please see other thread here http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,357052.0.html
