Flyngs in Cork
« on: Friday 30 January 09 19:03 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Can anyone help with finding parental records of Tomothy Fleing (Flyng), recorded in UK census records as born Cork, 1808? He was a tailor by profession and settled in Bristol. As a newbie, I have been helped immensely on the Gloucestershire side, but have no idea about Ireland! Thanks,
Alan

I wonder if the surname could be a variant of Flynn ?

There are three Tailors in Mallow Town, Co. Cork listed in Pigots Directory of 1824 :

Jas. Flynn,  John Flynn,  Wm. Flynn.

all at Spa-walk

Also a clothing related Flynn in Newmarket  Co. Cork
Maurice Flynn, Scateen-street
-  Spinning Wheel Manufacturer & Turner

As I understand the dialect of Cork... double nn was pronounced ng locally and so, when Timothy Flyng (Fleing in 1841 census of Bristol) registered, he might have anglicised his name, or  the parish priest might have mispellt the name when recording births etc? How can I dig deeper? Your leads look very likely, as tailoring was an exclusive profession - not many about, therefore any Flynn/Flyngs registered were probably related? Another feature of my wing of the family is that there is at least one in each generation with the middle name or Christian name of Carson - like me, my Grandfather, his father and his father before him! ??? ???

Unfortunately the 1824 edition of Pigots is the oldest I have that includes  Co. Cork, and there are no further details.

The Irish Family History Foundation website includes records for that part of Co. Cork. The Mallow Parish RC records start the year after Timothy was born, but the marriage records start over 40 yrs  earlier.

Mallow (Gap in baptisms 1810-1817 & 1829-1831) Baptisms : 1809-1902 Marriages : 1758-1902

The Church of Ireland Mallow parish records go back a bit further

Baptism:     1732-1899  Marriage:     1780-1899

The website is www.irish-roots.ie – the index is free to search, the records are pay-per-vew (€5). There could also be other parishes that included parts of Mallow town.

Thanks Shane! I think I'll hold off pay per view until I've managed to pay my tax bill!  ;D
But, thankyou very much for your information. What a minefield Irish genealogy is!
Alan.

Flynn was (and still is) quite a common name - top counties where the name occurs in the mid 1800s :

1.      Cork      525
2.      Waterford      410
3.      Leitrim      279
4.      Roscommon      261
5.      Mayo      174
6.      Kerry      171
7.      Galway      158
8.      Sligo      112
9.      Limerick      108
10.      Dublin      105

(based on heads of households on Griffiths Valuation)

That poses an imposing task overall! But we are presuming that Timothy was indeed a Flynn and not a Flyng (or Fleing as he appeared in the UK 1841 census for Gloucestershire/Brisstol!!! I know there are are also Flyngs out there, but . . . . there, as they say, is the rub. Thanks for continuing - I appreciate your time is probably taken up with other requests. But if you come across anything else that might put me on the right road, I'll be really 'chuffed'!!!
Cheers again,
Alan.
