Samuel Anstis
« on: Monday 02 February 09 21:55 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I am looking for some information please on:

Samuel Anstis born 1850 in Upottery, Devon travelling to Victoria, Oz in 1877 before moving to NZ (why?) and believed he married Elizabeth Ashley in 1888. We understand he had 6 children and died in 1934?

Children were: Edith Mary 1889, Eleanor Sarah 1890, Jan Hilda 1891, William James 1892,  Robert Ashley 1893, and Thomas V 1895.

We are in the UK and researching the family history and we have unearthed a NZ connection. Any background or further information on what his occupation was, where he lived, when married, what happened to their children etc. would be appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation...

Hi
I have ancestors that first went to Aus, for various reasons, occupation, mining, part of the different migration schemes. Was it assisted passage.
Otherwise many appear to have called in Aus and moved onto NZ fairly quickly.

Yes marriage was 1888 folio ref is 1540

(Daughter)  Eleanor Sarah GANE died around 1955.

Archives NZ (Auckland office) hold the following probate file:

GANE - Eleanor Sarah - widow - Auckland - 1955  :

[Sorry, have been unable to locate a cemetery record for her ...  but someone else on here, may be able to help ?].

(Good work Bren. )   :)

Burials at Waihi Old Lawn (as well as Samuel ANSTIS) - include Elizabeth ANSTIS and William Ashley ANSTIS.
(Unfortunately no dates of death/or burial,  are given on the cemetery records at South Taranaki District Council website) ?

Thanks Lu.

Petea
My Father has a VERY tenuous link to a woman who married an ANSTIS.
Unfortunately he died decades ago, so not sure how much the widow will know of his family.

So, might be able to provide a "living" link, but it will take a few days to do some delicate digging.
