Updated! Monumental Inscriptions for Shotley (Snods Edge) re BELL
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 05:43 GMT (UK) »
UPDATED 5 February 2009!!!!!!!

My apologies for this lookup request. Have just discovered while googling that I had already asked for these details at the end of 2006!  :-[

The reply came via personal message to say that there were no records on the MI's for our BELL's.

Apologies once again. Thank you.  ::)

Hello

Clutching at straws here trying to find more information about my ancestors Joseph BELL and Jane BELL (nee BECK) who lived at Mosswood in the parish of Shotley and may have been buried at Snods Edge.

Joseph died between 1841 and 1851 and have only an approximate birth date circa 1775 from the 1841 Census.

Jane BELL (nee BECK) died between 1861 and 1871 and was born about 1784.

Their son George was buried at St John's, Shotley on 22 April 1828, aged 88 days.

Any information would be most helpful, thank you!

Kind regards and God bless you,
Lynne x

Hi Ruskie

Thanks for that. Yes, have looked but the BT's for Shotley go only as far as 1840. Did find the burial for George though as mentioned, which is why I'm hoping Joseph and Jane may have been buried there as well.

Thanks for your interest!

Kind regards and God bless you,

Of course, Lynne, I should have noticed that.

Have you had a look at Durhamrecordsonline?
www.durhamrecordsonline.com

This site is quite good for deaths:
www.familyhistoryonline.net

Both require you to register and there are fees involved.

Unfortunately Shotley is not yet included in the family history online database.

Their son George was buried at St John's, Shotley on 22 April 1828, aged 88 days.

St John's Shotley was not built until the mid-1830's as a chapel of ease, so George would have been buried at St Andrews Shotley (Grey Mare Hill)....where incidentally my great-great-great grandparents are also buried!
What you see on the BT's mostly relates to St Andrews.

Hello again Ruskie

Thank you for the links. Given the reply from Jennifer familyhistoryonline will not be of help at the moment but can check Durham Records Online and see if there is coverage.

Thanks and God bless you,

Lynne,

Durham Records Online does cover Shotley.....but only until 1812 unfortunately!

Re. the death of Jane Bell, had you noticed on freeBMD a death in the 1st quarter of 1870 of Jane Bell aged 86 (i.e. born c. 1784)? Hexham 10b 171. (Shotley was in Hexham Reg. District)

Hi Jennifer

Thanks for that! Gosh! I nearly didn't include St John's but put it in as an afterthought!! Just as well! Who said ignorance was bliss?!

My Great Great Great Grandparents also had connections to Shotley in that they married there in 1840! Edward COULSON and Mary Ann BELL (daughter  of Joseph and Jane above). The copy of their marriage certificate from the GRO states only that they married in the "Church of Shotley" and had assumed it was St John's. Had not even heard of St Andrew's. How would I be able to tell?

The burial of George BELL is fairly straightforward as obviously the church of St John's was not built yet! Will have to go back to the BT's (burial is on p. 132/177) and see if there is any indication of the church.

However, another record for Edward COULSON and Mary Ann BELL's first son Thomas (who was christened the same day they married on 12 May 1840  ::) [are there any rolling eyes smiley's that are also whistling?!!!]) is in the BT's (forgot to note page number).

How do I know in which church his parents married and where he was christened, St John's or St Andrew's?

Thanks for your help.

Hi again Jennifer

Thanks for checking the Durham Records Online coverage for Shotley!

No, hadn't seen that death for Jane BELL, thank you! A definite possibility!

It's such a common name though so will have to do some research in the censuses to see if there are any other candidates (not able to afford certificates at the moment)!!  :P

Thanks again and God bless you,
Lynne x
