alpha stevens - when did he die??
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 17:13 GMT (UK) »
I have traced an up-to-now unknown branch of the family to the Bristol area. One son, Alpha, married Elizabeth and had a painting/decorating business in Barrow Lane. In the 1901 census, he was listed as 'retired builder', and doesn't appear on the 1911 census when Elizabeth lists herself as 'widowed' and living in Filton. I assume Alpha (what a name! - he wasn't even the 1st son!) died between 1901 and 1911 but can't find any trace of death or burial. Can anyone help me?
Derbs/Nott: Stevens, Stevenson, Knowles, Taylor,; Yorks: Peacock, Lee, Willey, Hodgson, Pearson, Sedgwick; Gloucs: Stevens; Angus: Cable, Bain, Millar, Jack

Thanks for the information - where did you find it?? I've checked the BMD lists and still can't find him there, nor on ancestry. Am I missing something vital?

Hi,

Looks like lizdb used "surname variation".......Stephens instead of Stevens.

Thanks, Nanny Jan. I keep forgetting about the different spellings.

I just put the Christian name "Alpha" in and nothing else, other than a wide range of dates of the right sort of time.
Then I looked down the list of Alpha's who'd died in that date range (a surprising number!)
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

I guess it's the simple approach that often works best. I think I sometimes get bogged down in trying to be too specific (or clever??)!
