Eliza Gordon
« on: Thursday 05 February 09 16:50 GMT (UK) »
I'm completely stuck trying to find out more about my late granny Eliza Gordon. Her side of my family tree is almost completely blank despite all my efforts!

She was born c 1895 and died in April 1987. She was living in Peterculter at that time.

She married Alexander Gordon from Tough in 1918, and they had 3 daughters - one of whom was my mum Jessie Mary, born in 1920. I have no living relatives that I know of on that side of my family to ask.

It would be really great if anyone can supply any clues that I can follow up.

Thanks

Marilyn

Hi Marilyn

Have you had a look at Eliza and Alexander's 1918 marriage cert.? The only one I can see for that year in Aberdeen is this one:

1918   Alexander Gordon and Elizabeth Chris Sim in ST NICHOLAS, ABERDEEN CITY/ABERDEEN - Ref:168/01 0781

The marriage cert would include their ages, their parents' names including mother's maiden names. With this information you should be able to find Eliza's parents' marriage and her birth/census details hopefully.

The image of the cert is available to view on Scotlands People: www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Hi Marilyn - welcome to Rootschat. :)

Strange one, this! Your grandmother's death entry (just the index) does show on ScotlandsPeople. Her full name was Eliza Ann Gordon, maiden surname George. However, I can't see a marriage for an Alexander Gordon to an Eliza George between 1910 and 1920. :-\ Do you have your mum's birth certificate? If she was born in Scotland, the parents' place of marriage and the date would be noted.

Edit: I'm so slow. ;D

Hi Marilyn and Hume  :)

If the death entry shows as maiden name George as Hume has found, then Marilyn I would do as Hume suggests and start with what you know for certain, your mother's birth cert to confirm her parents' details particularly Eliza's maiden name.

Given the period, it's one that you would have to order as it is outside the time frame where you can view certs. online.
