Hi Anne

Do you really not know any more at all - e.g. the names and approx dates of birth of any of the 5 children?  With so little definite information every little counts.

Have you found the family in any census?

Do you know what JTC's occupation was?

There are several individuals named John Thomas Crossland born in Yorkshire at about the right time.  One of them, b abt 1864 Darton, was a coal miner living in Kexborough in 1891 with wife Annie and children Annie E (9), Maud A (6), John R (4) and Joseph N (2).  Might this be your man? Ref is RG12/3783/33/5.

Maud A 16
John Richd 15
Joseph N 14
George R 12 b Kexbro
Norina 3 b Barnsley

and also with them is Annie E Crossland, "sister", 26 b Darton.

Just flagging this topic as I have CROSSLANDs from the Darton area in my tree and would be interested to see if there is a connection - if this does turn out to be your family.

Hi Anne,

I don't know much about my CROSSLANDs unfortunately - I would love to find out more.

Joseph CROSSLAND married Mary MERRIWEATHER in Darton on 15 June 1846.  Joseph was a bachelor of full age and a miner.  His father was also Joseph a labourer.  Joseph's abode was Hoyland in the Parish of Wath.

I can not find Joseph and Mary on 1851 census (I understand the returns for this area may have been destroyed) and he died in 1857.

They had two children Amanda born 1848 and Anthony Merriweather CROSSLAND born 1853 and that is about all I know.

I finished putting flesh on the bones this afternoon
John Thomas was my gggrandfather, John Richard was my grandfather and John Thomas was my dad so you see what trouble I have when just their first name is put down.
So far I have on the 1901 census-:
John Thos. 39 yrs.  coal miner hewer born Darton
Annie 38 yrs. born Heckmondwhite
Maud A 16yrs. Warehouse fustain cutter Bretton West
John Richard 15 yrs. Lab. in glass bottle works Bretton West
Joseph N 14 yrs. born Barugh Green
George R 12 yrs born Kexborough
Norina 3 years born Barnsley
Living with them at this time is JTC's sister Annie E aged 26 years born at Darton

I got them on the 1891 census as Anna posted.

On the 1881 census there are a couple who could fit the same as BMD site has 2 or 3 that could be him, but at the minute it's after midnight and he's giving me a head ache :) so I'm off to bed.

Thanks to all of you who answered my posting and speak to you soon, Anne.
