Blains From Barr
« on: Friday 06 February 09 16:44 GMT (UK) »
Hello All, I am in the process of researching my family (Blain) and have pretty well traced it back to Inch in Wigtownshire but there is gets a little vague.  A James Blain married a Marey McKibbon on Dec. 12, 1782.  I have indications that James may be the son of William Blain and Mrs. William Barr ???? born in Barmiln Barr about 1752.   I have posted a query on the Wigtownshire form but maybe someone from Ayrshire may have further insight.  It is also interesting to note that the mother of this family is in the LDS records as Mrs. William Barr.  Is it possible that this may have been a second marriage for Mrs William Barr or is there an error in the transcription in regards to this record.  The LDS records indicate that William was born abt 1715 in Barr but I have been unable to locate any records of his parentage.  Is it possible that someone may have some insight into this family?

Regards

Murray

Not sure where the possible name for James' mother has been sourced. The original image on the Old Parish Register entries may say more but Scotlands People is only showing William Blain and no more for parents. The children showing for a William Blain include

1   05/09/1742   BLAIN   JEAN
2   27/03/1744   BLAIN   WILLIAM
3   05/07/1747   BLAIN   MARY
4   03/11/1749   BLAIN   ROBERT
5   30/12/1752   BLAIN   JAMES
6   11/04/1757   BLAIN   DAVID

All entries are in Barr. It is unclear whether these are birth or christening entries from the index.

You will find on IGI that actual extracts from the OPRs for Barr are one of those frustrating batches (batch no. C115802  1689-1820) where only girls have been loaded. To get more complete details (i.e. the boys  ::)) you need to check on Scotlands People.

On a personal opinion, I would say that the submitted entries on IGI showing mother as Mrs William Barr have simply been put in as a matter of filling in the box by whoever submitted the information. I wouldn't read too much into that at this stage.

I cannot see a marriage for a William Blaine (with wildcards for spellings) in Barr searching between 1728-44. There is only one marriage/bann entries showing for a William Blain anywhere in Scotland. Given what you know of the family, the place names are possible/interesting:

02/11/1732   William Blain and Elisabeth Ferguson in Inch (Wigtown)   /WIGTOWN 886/ 0010 0084
30/11/1732   William Blain and Elizabeth Fergusson in Ballantrae/AYR    579/ 0010 0186

Banns would normally be read in Parish that the bride and groom were living in at the time of the marriage. The above two could both be banns or the last could be the  marriage. As always with these OPR entries, you don't know what is there until you look.

Monica  :)

Hi Monica.

As before, thank you for your insite.  It looks like I may have to do some digging in Scotlands People.  I will also follow up with Jenny
