What have these chaps got in common?
« on: Friday 06 February 09 23:20 GMT (UK) »
The following list of Newburians appears in the Newbury Weekly News of 8 Jan 1868. I thought it would be interesting to see if anyone could guess what they had in common. If any descendants want a copy of the article make yourselves known. I'm particularly interested in anyone who has researched the brewers (in bold).

Totally wrong - but strangely on topic.

The names are as listed, no more. What are you asking for?

Cobbett & Wilkes certainly spent time in Newbury but a long time before the list was compiled (they must have been long dead by then) - these are local citizens, shopkeepers, publicans, brewers, tradesmen etc, all from the Borough apart from one Speenhamlander who is allowed to join in as a Special concession.

Nothing quite so dramatic - Newbury has had a few burning but there is no record of any hangings (which doesn't mean there weren't any just that there haven't been any for a long long time - not since the 1650s or earlier). Newbury people convicted of a capital crime would be hanged in Reading.

The men listed were all sworn in as Special Constables at a time when the Fenian menace was threatening the country (more in peoples imagination than reality).

But nonetheless connected!  I thought you might be alluding to the trial of the Fenian Michael BARRETT who was publicly hanged at Newgate later that year as a scapegoat for the perpetrators of the Clerkenwell bombing.
