James Gasson marriage
« on: Saturday 07 February 09 17:15 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find details of my great-grandparents' marriage, but don't know my great-grandmother's surname.
My great-grandfather, James Gasson was living at Cuckfield on the 1871 census, and was aged 6
By the 1891 census he had married, and had two children; the family were living at Heath Common, Thakeham, & are listed as:
James Gasson, age 26, b. Balcombe; occupation: sawyer & cleaver
Eliza Gasson, age 29, b. Horsham
Harriet E. age 2, b. Cootham
Henry G. (my grandfather), age 3 months, b. Thakeham
By the time of the 1901 census there were several more children, & the family were living at Holly Grove, Ardingly;  the spelling of my great-grandmother's name had changed to Elisa with an S.

Without knowing her maiden name, or where they were actually married, I'm unsure how to trace their marriage record.  Any help gratefully appreciated.
Gasson, Oliver, Tucknott

The best thing will be to get one of the childrens birth certs (your grandfathers would be the obvious) as this will give mothers maiden name.

Hi Banana (and Liz),

The kosher way of finding out Eliza's maiden name would be to order Henry G's birth cert.

Now, in the meantime, I searched FreeBMD for a marriage of a James Gasson to an Eliza between 1881 and 1891, and there's only one popping up:

Sep 1887
Reigate 2a 270
James Gasson to either Minnie Rose E Johnson or Eliza Tuc(h/k)nott

The 1871 census shows an Eliza "Tuckott" (but her birth was registered as Tucknott, Sep 1863) age 7, born and living in Horsham.

This Eliza is a little younger than expected, and Reigate is not in Sussex, therefore we would have to find a reason why they married in Surrey instead of Sussex, which I can't.

So I agree with Liz - looks like you need the birth cert  :-\

Henry Gilbert Gasson's birth is on freebmd.org.uk   Registered in Jan 1891 Thakeham 2b 350.    If you look on that site or the freebmd bit of ancestry.co.uk you will find lots of Gasson records.  Reigate is very close to Sussex but it might be risky to go for that one without proof as Tati says.

Horsham & Reigate are close - even by shanks pony - the Reigate Church is old, but otherwise not much going for it .... maybe some other family connection.

Hmm

When I lived in Reigate I dont think my Shanks pony would have made it to Horsham often.

19.6 miles according to AA !!

Different areas altogether, even if (relatively) close.

But lots can happen between censuses, family could move, not settle and move back again. Or her family could move to Reigate, she marries childhood Sussex sweetheart, in home parish, now Reigate, but then they settle back in Sussex.
We could try and tract the Tucknotts in 1891 (not long after Eliza's marriage) to see if they are now in Surrey.
But still not conclusive.
Better to get that birth cert!

Oh come on, 20 miles (if it is that far   :P ) was nowt in those days on foot - not that they would have been at that time, plenty of transport twixt market towns.

I've got a feeling Reigate was important for something else ..... and not sure it was always Surrey (obviously was then tho ... )

 :)

used to work there, and something about a Castle and Tunel rings a bell - spent lunchtimes in a pub tho ....

I can't find a better match for Eliza in 1881 than the 21 year old Eliza Huknote at East Grinstead :-\
(Her mum dies in 1877, stepdad is lodging somewhere)

Always been Surrey .....

Hey - do you think we might have met!

on second thoughts, if you were in the pub .... no ....I was a child when connected with Reigate.
