Looking for advise re: Dad's RAF service.
« on: Sunday 08 February 09 13:12 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for help to find anyone who knew my father during his service in the RAF during WW2 and/or some information re: his whereabouts and what he was doing during WW2.
His name was Dennis Hiscox, born April 1924 in Wales but was living in Coventry when he joined the RAF in Dec 1942.
I have a copy of his service records but they are pretty sparse.  A brief description is as follows excluding his promotions, courses etc.  I believe he was a navigator, too tall to be a gunner at least.   Oh yes and what does mustering mean?

Units etc.
1 ACRC 9/1943
3FTW  10/1943
ACDC  1/1944
51 GupPool A   1/1944
ACDC
31 RC Wing  4/1944
ACDC   5/1944
Tempsford   6/1944
ACDC  7/1944
Wight 9275  7/1944
31 PD  8/1944
Canada.  No.1 AOS Malton, Ontario - Course 109B Navigators.  31945
England
16 EFTS  4/1945
7 PRC  7/195
3 ACHU  8/1945
S of AT  9/1945
2 PDC  11/1945
9 PDC  11/1945
AC8EA  12/1945
4 BS (4)  12/1945
India    12/1945 unil 3/1947.

I have many photos that he took in Canada with names of other course members and also photos of India mentioning places such as Mauripur, Sgts mess, Sion, Bombay; Kelso House No.4 aircrew house; Juhu beach, Saidapet, Ootachamund.

Names mentioned on photos include:  Mike Plant, Dave Johnson, Gerald Orton, Gerald Mantersy, Frank L Nuttman, Alan J Goldsmith, Tom Rosser, Ronald Bourlet, Gerry Barratt, Bernard Cox, Robert James Mackintosh, K Gill, GW Johnson, Bill Moore, Jon Jagy?, Ray Woodhouse, L Angeloni, Bil Collaril?, Peter E Birkett, Ted Barratt, Doug McKenacky, DWM Davison, RH Batty.

My father married my mother in 1958 but unfortunately died before I was born in 1959.
My mother died when I was young and I didnt ask the right questions about my father when I had a chance.
I would so like to find someone who knew him, but if not more information about his life during the war years would be much appreciated.
Thank you
Alison Jardine

That photo may have been taken in Canada, the white flash on his cap indicates he is pending/undergoing aircrew training.

"mustering" on its own means "gathering" however if it is written as "re mustering", a common term, certainly in the RAF if not in all arms of the services, means changing from one trade to another, therefore one would re muster from WO/AG to NAV.

My father trained navigators in Canada, mostly Ontario. His name was Franc Wyght, which could be misspelled of course. Got any navigator's names? :)
Cork: Sarsfield
Wexford: Hayes, Heffernan, Hennessey, Lambert, Powers, Stafford, White, Wight, Wyght
Edinburgh & Glasgow: Brown, Wilson
