Bit of a clean-up and date please.
« on: Monday 09 February 09 17:12 GMT (UK) »
Unlike my mother's collection, my father's photographs are a mess.  Most hacked out of their mounts, the card split to make them thinner (so backs lost), stuck into an album with an industrial grade adhesive, or sellotape or both! And no indication whatsoever as to who, where, what, when.

This one has fared better than most, at least we have the back.  Family consensus is that it is probably Eliza Lamborn, born 1848, but does this agree with the age of the lady and date of photo?  Best alternative would be someone born 1823.

Thanks

Robert

Hi Robert...looking at the dress, the hair and the back of the card I'd say early 1880s, so Eliza Lamborn is likely...

Sounds like your dad has quite a mangled collection of old photos, which is certainly a shame but better than no collection at all :) Post them one at a time with as good a scan as you can get and we'll do our best with them...

Cheers,

Thanks for the date China, and thanks Tiberian & Terry for the brilliant clean-ups.

I would agree with China in that this is an 1880's study going by the frizzed hair style, the clothing and the manner in which the photograph has been taken but I would favour a later date in that decade, and just creeping into the next,  rather than an earlier one. On the 1881 census the photographer, Charles Joseph Jones (b1864-d 1924), is shown as being a pupil teacher aged 16 and living in Dorset, in 1892 he is found in Islington as this is where he marries. The earliest mention of him as a photographer that I can find is for August 1892 where he is found trading from the address shown on this study (he traded from there until 1903 when the property was taken over by someone else). So with this in mind I would suggest a date more in keeping with 1885 to 1892.
