1787 marriage - Saint Nicholas, Liverpool
« on: Tuesday 10 February 09 01:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I'd like to get more information on the following marriage which I got from IGI.

6 January 1787
James Forrest married Margaret Hutton

I believe this couple moved to Stirlingshire, Scotland as I have records for 4 children to these names in Stirlings.  This marriage is the only one I can find on IGI.

As I don't venture into English records very often, I am unsure what sort of detail is on the record.  Nor do I know how to check for their births / parents / siblings.

I'd appreciate any help or advice you can give me.

Thanks

Dave

Hi

You would not get either of their fathers names as they were only shown on marriages post- Civil Registration (1.7.1837)  - mothers names are never shown on English marriage certs

If both were over 21yrs when they married - it will just show "full age" so no clues as to their birthyears.  It may show his occupation

You would get witnesses names but unless they were the same surname(s) it may not help

If they satisfied the residential requirements for banns - they may be shown as "of this parish"  This doesn't necessarily mean they were born in Liverpool as many people gave "convenience" addresses to enable them to marry in a particular area

Thanks Carole.
For future reference, how would I go about applying for a copy of an English record?

Hi

This may (or may not) be some of their children.  Peggy is a corruption of Margaret.

JAMES FORREST   Christening:  14 OCT 1787   Benns Garden Or Renshaw Street Presbyterian  Liverpool
Father:  JAMES FORREST     Mother:  PEGGY

ELEANOR FORREST  Christening:  AUG 1789   Benns Garden Or Renshaw Street Presbyterian   Liverpool
Father:  JAMES FORREST    Mother:  PEGGY

Renshaw St is in the city centre as is St Nicholas.

Thanks, I wouldn't have thought to look for Peggy.

Whether that's the correct children?  :-\

Dave

Hello Dave,

I have transcriptions of some marriage entries from St Nicholas around that time.

All of mine state whether the marriage was by Licence or by Banns, give the address and occupation of the groom, and the names of the Minister and the Witnesses.

Baptismal entries that I have also give the address and occupation of the father.

I too noticed those baptisms to James & Peggy - and was interested to see that they were in a Presbyterian church.  Perhaps James hailed from Scotland?

Incidentally, if you search in the IGI for births/christenings to father James Forrest, mother Margaret (unlike Scotland, mother's surnames weren't recorded) it brings up those two baptisms.  Happily, the IGI includes Peggy as a version of Margaret.

Regards,

JAP
