Marriage cert, where is Borough S G? COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 10 February 09 09:34 GMT (UK) »
I have the marriage certificate in front of me for
Flora Brown, address 11 Cole Street, Borough SG and
John Herbert, address 35 Trinity Street, Borough SG.
It is dated 3 April 1909.

It is probably blindingly obvious but what is Borough S G?
The church was "Church of the Most Precious Blood" Worcester Street, Southwark Street, London SE.  Is this a catholic church?

Any opinions, please,
Abiam

While waiting for the experts - my very amateur information

In a file I have of London names/boroughs, Borough EA is  an Ecclesiastical Area in the London Burough of Southwark. Looking at your Cole and Trinity streets on Google Maps they are quite close to the Borough Tube station and Borough Rd and Borough High Street - so Borough is presumably the locality/surburb/Parish name

SG I am still trying to determine -  could it be S6 - but I don't know what that means either - I'll wait to hear from those who know

Well Borough is in the London Borough of Southwark so I wondered if it was really SC and therefore Southwark Council or Southwark something

I did a google for your church and yes it is Catholic http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=43044

I would suggest that the SG is for the registration district of St George Southwark.  Borough Road was a sub-district.

Borough is famous for its market - it claims to be the oldest food market in London.  And if I remember correctly, Bridget Jones lived just around the corner!

Thanks Nell, it's a whole new learning curve.  I have never had to venture into the London Boroughs before.  Complicated isn't it?

Thanks from me also Nell

And I surely didn't go through my localities PDF very well!  I am trying to find the link from whence it came Abiam - I found it when I was having problems understanding all the London localities and it has been very useful - there were a few St George places - but this one
SAINT GEORGE THE MARTYR, SOUTHWARK CP CIVIL PARISH - SOUTHWARK LB

should have been easy enough for me to find  ::)

Took me awhile - this is a PDF file of the localities and boroughs

Thank you, for taking the trouble.  It looks as though it will help me as this branch were born, married and died all over London!  And I just could not work out what was what,
Cheers,
Abiam
