any idea what a boatwarie was

just wondered if anyone knew what a boatawarie was in the 1871 census and why he was the only msn aboard on  census night?

Boatswain?
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

no, he is listed as a boatawarie, do you think that it could be the same as a boatswain? (im new to this occupation thing)

Yes, I agree with Hackstaple, more than likely boatswain.

RG10/641 page 114

I remember looking this up for you before.

He is only listed as Boatawarie in the index - the same as he is listed as born West Bromwich in the index.  I looked it up then and it was a bad transcription - birthplace Woodchurch.
