Phillips family - Dumfries
« on: Tuesday 10 February 09 21:06 GMT (UK) »
Wonder if anyone could assist me with research into Mary Louise Phillips of Dumfries probably born around 1860-1864, daughter of Sarah Wood and Charles Phillips.  Any census information in regard to both sides of the family would be great, also the possibility of migration records to Australia.

There's a birth record on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for a Mary Louisa PHILLIPS in Dumfries just a wee bit earlier than the year range that you give.......

Hi  :)

Further to ibi's info, the IGI (extracted) has Mary Louisa Phillips b. 10 March 1859, Dumfries.  Parents Charles Samuel Francis Phillips and Sarah Ellen Wood.

No other children listed on the IGI for this couple.

I don't see them on the 1861 or 1871 censuses in Scotland so far - do you have any idea when they might have emigrated?

Hi gadget,

That's what I'm not sure about at all, maybe they migrated soon after Mary Louise's birth.    Certainly Mary married in Queensland, Australia in 1887

I had a peek at the birth cert and Charles was an 'attendant at the Crichton Institute' * in 1859. They were living at 12 English Street at the time.

Unfortunately, being 1859, it does not give their marriage date and so far I've not found one in Scotland  :(

I'll do a bit more looking.

The 1851 census for Dumfries has this:

3 St Michaels Street, Dumfries
Parish 821 ED 18 Page 15

Sarah Wood, head, 21, French Polisher of Furniture
William Mclean, son, 8 months

both b. Dumfries

This might not be your Sarah Wood but it might be worth following up.
