 Hi GeoffE.

In the electoral registers   it is under Carholme ward ?

that is up to 1934,  when I think the address dissapears.

I can't find it :(

There are a few EXTONs in the 1946 Directory which may interest you-
10 St Michael's Terrace (Michaelgate to Gibraltar Hill), Arthur
51 Maple St (off Newark Rd), Tom
3 Pelham St, Bert
6 Maud's Hill Terr, Edward
18 Albany Terrace, Mrs
41 Little Bargate St, Mrs

If you have access to the Electoral Registers, you may be able to find the names of the Mrs's.  From what I remember, the directories from 1930 on are more helpful in that they have a name index containing every householder.

Thankyou for those GeoffE,

Yes everyone of those are mine  :)

My Grandma Minnie Exton, lived at 2, Francis Court , up until her death in early 1935.

the last entry in the register in 1933, has her , plus her married daughter Minnie Coulson.
and like I mentioned , I could not find " Francis Court " , after that date.

( have found a map though with the name H.E.Starmers on it, quite a few plots round that area with his name on, have put in an order for the land register )

must not high jack my own query    ;D ;D

Hi Eilleen

Using the 1881 census and entering Francis Court into the Ancestry search engine it shows it as being just after number 256 High Street in the parish of St Martins. I think it is perhaps somewhere around what is today Corporation Street.

Might be worth a walk along the High Street tomorrow to see where 256 is. I’m pretty sure the numbering hasn’t altered.

Well done Alan!

Yes, 248 High St was on the north corner of Corporation St.  In fact, I think Eilleen knows these places quite well as her shop is about 260 if I remember correctly!

Francis Court appeared to be between 256 and 257 High St.

EDIT:  This was Eilleen's shop thread. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,243041.0.html

I've now located Francis Court in the 1946 Lincoln Directory on Ancestry.

252 & 253 Lincoln Company of Jehovah's Witnesses
255 & 255a John SCOTT, Grocers
256 Lawson, Illman & Co, Florists
............ Here is Francis Court
257 Miss C WILKINSON, Ladies' outfitter
258 Alex CHRISTOPHER, Horse Flesh Butcher.

I've seen (perhaps in an Elvin book) that Alex CHRISTOPHER used to have stables between St Benedicts and Brayford.  My dad when he was a lad used to work with Alex CHRISTOPHER, so he told me.  I think they were delivering cartloads of sand from Bracebridge to (possibly) Boultham Moor when the estate was being built.

Elsewhere in the directory - and what Eilleen wanted to know - Francis Court ... from 257 High St to 44 Hungate. No houses listed.

I bet it was in the centre, where two lines of closely-spaced buildings seem to form an alley. http://tinyurl.com/b547dc
