Researching military history
« on: Wednesday 21 April 04 22:13 BST (UK) »
I have just discovered a family member listed as a soldier on the 1881 census with the Reg Life Guards, Regents Park Barracks, London - details below:

Job REVILL, soldier, unm, age 21, born Gainsboro, Notts, occupation trooper

By 1891 Job was a steel worker and living in Scunthorpe.

From http://www.thelifeguards.co.uk/  I have discovered that between 1881 and 1891 the Life Guards saw action in Egypt (1882) and Sudan (1884).

I don't live close to London so can't get to the PRO, and have never researched military history before.  Can anyone suggest how to go about finding out more?

Sasha.

Thank you to both peterbennett and MrB for their advice.

I didn't realise that it was possible to search the PRO records in such a way online - I've got plenty to keep me busy for a while now.

Sasha.
