Looking for graves in Pendlebury.
« on: Wednesday 11 February 09 18:44 GMT (UK) »
My great grandfather and great grandmother both died in 1899 within months of each other.  They were both living in Spencer St., Pendlebury at the time.  I have checked the local churches standing at the time and am guessing that they were both buried in one of those.

Does anyone know if the memorial inscriptions have been transcribed for the Pendlebury churches?  I dont live in the area, otherwise I would be up there now with my torch and umbrella.

Can anyone advice?  Who would know if the inscriptions had been transcribed?

Hi Ali

By this date, they would almost cetainly have been bried in one of the cemeteries, unless they were in a small village where the churchyard was still being used.  In the case of Pendlebury it would be the cemetery.

Not sure which though.  It might depend on family and religion as well as area.

My family from there were at Moston but they were RC.  Weaste and some others have some entries indexed on;line but you pay for the original.

I'll look for the address.

Also, if you email local studies  with an exact date, they might look for an announcement in the Manchestyer evening News.  All my family in the area and loads they knew used it.  It nearly always gives a burial place for ours.

Do you have a name you can give?  People may know other databases.

Best wishes

Thank you Emms.

I have the details for my great grandfather:
James Hiscox.  died 13 Sept. 1899.

His wife Elizabeth died a few months later but I do not have the details on me (I am at work!!!!).

They were both living at Spencer Street, Pendlebury at time of death.

I will look at contacting local studies when have the time.  I did briefly check the Weaste cemetary the other evening but couldnt find a Hiscox.

Thank you again.

Hi  There are two Hiscox's here [Manchester Burial Records] but they're later:

Baby Hiscox 1945 Gorton Cemetery and

James 1931 Southern Cemetery.  You have to pay for details too.  Local studies papers may well be the best route.

PS Also James Greenland Hiscocks 1896 Southern Cemetery

and William Hiscocks 1880, Manchester General Cemetery.  A bit early for your James but these are from old registers which are not always easy to read so may be worth investigating?

Best wishes with the search anyway

Thank you for that info.  I will look into it.
It is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
