Hopper Bridlington area

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to locate the burial of John Hopper and his wife Mary Amelia Hopper nee Smith. John was born about 1770-1780. He was a master plumber & glazier in High St Bridlington in 1829 and his son Francis Hopper had the business in 1831 according to the trade directories.
John Hopper married Mary (Amelia) Smith (1783-1859) in 1800 at Bridlington. They had at least seven children the youngest being my great great grandmother Eleanor Dorothy Hopper born about 1822.
John made a will dated January 1831 which was proved in May 1835.
Mary is shown on the 1841 Census at Huttons Ambo, Malton with her daughter Eleanor in service to the Darley family. In 1851 Mary has moved to the Darleys residence in Buttercrambe (Aldby Park). Her place of birth is shown as Hornby? could be Hornsea?. She died in 1859 in Swinton near Malton but I have been unable to locate a burial for her in the Malton area.
I would appreciate any help whatsoever in locating the place of burial of John and Mary Hopper any any other information on the family.

I have found the following which I think relates to the marriage of your John Hopper.

Bridlington Priory
14th August 1800   John Hopper and Mary Smith both of this parish,  Witnesses:  John Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Richard Smith

I also found the following baptism which I think is your great, great grandmothers.

Bridlington Priory
18th July 1822  Eleanor Dorothy daughter of John and Mary Amelia Hopper of Bridlington, Glazier.

If you have the names of any of Eleanor's siblings, I would be more than happy to look for their baptisms, should you want this information.

There is a record of a burial in 1831 of a John Hopper of Bridlington Quay aged 61 years but I have not found a burial entry for a Mary Hopper in 1859, so cannot be certain that this is your John Hopper.

Thanks for the reply. I do have the siblings baptisms although at the time of writing his will their father John only mentions four children, Francis (executor) Edward, Charles Smith and Eleanor Dorothy. The other executor is named as Richard Smith who I believe may be the brother of Mary who was left land and property in Sewerby.

I did have the burial for John Hopper in 1831 but was not sure if it related to my interest or not as the person who passed the details on to me stated that the entry related to a mariner.

I have rechecked the burial for John Hopper in 1831, there is no mention of a profession, just the date of burial, name, age and abode.

I have found baptisms for the children whom you mention and also possibly one more.

Baptism Bridlington Priory
7th November 1804  Richard son of John Hopper and Mary his wife, late Smith.

I also found a possible burial at Bridlington Priory.

20th January 1809  Richard son of John Hopper, 4 years.

I have also located a possible marriage for Francis and the baptism of children who I believe were his children.  If you would like this information, let me know.

I have looked on 1851 image and I am sure Mary's birth place was Hornby (nr Beadale.)

There is a baptism there on IGI for MARY AMELIA MACKENZIE born 19 Sep 1782 baptised 24 Oct 1782 patents George and Dorathy (sic).

I wonder if she was a widow when she married John HOPPER.

She seems a bit young to be a widow and all those SMITH witnesses suggest she was a SMITH so I think I think the MACKENZIE baptism is probably just a co-incidence.

You mentioned in your previous post that John and Mary had at least seven children.  I think that I may have found the remaining two.  Below are the children of John Hopper and Mary late Smith which I have found.

Bridlington Priory 28th October 1800
Jane daughter of John Hopper and Mary his wife, late Smith
(I may also have found a marriage for Jane if you would like this information.)

In the copy of John's will is there any mention of a Jane or George Harrison?

26th April 1809
Thomas son of John Hopper and Mary his wife, late Smith

Possible burial  Bridlington Priory
11th December 1823 Thomas Hopper of Bridlington, aged 14 years

I also found the following which I think you already have the baptism dates for

Francis baptised 1802
Richard baptised 1804
Edward baptised 1806
Charles Smith baptised 1811
Eleanor Dorothy baptised 1822

Hi cjl,

Again many thanks. I think that the 1831 burial is now looking like a strong possibility. Will dated Jan 1831 and son Francis shown in the Directory as owning/running the business. Seems the will took a while before it was proved if he died during 1831. There is no mention in the will of Jane or the name Harrison. I have the marriage of Jane Hopper and George Harrison in 1821 with Jane shown as a minor the marriage with consent of her father John Hopper. No mention in his will so I suppose it is a possibility she may have died before 1831 or even emigrated.

Thanks also for the info on the other siblings of Eleanor. I guessed they had not survived until adulthood but have not yet made the trip to Beverley to go through Parish Records. If you have the details for Francis & Jane Hutchinson I would be most grateful.

Hi Pinetree,

Thanks for your contribution also. I hadn't seen the Bedale entry. The only fly in the ointment so to speak is the fact that Mary is shown as age 76 when she died in 1859 which would put her birth around 1783/4 meaning she would be 16/17 at the time of her marriage which although legal had to be with consent of the appropriate adult and also she would be 6/7 months pregnant with daughter Jane. Although the marriage of John & Mary was by licence there is no mention as to condition of either party at the time of the marriage. As you point out it is more likely that she was a Smith and with all those Smith witnesses they obviously wanted to make sure John Hopper signed the register.

The interesting thing about the Bedale entry was the name Dorothy which crops up in her daughters middle name but there again Smith crops up in her sons middle name so just coincidence I think.

I think that you are right in thinking that Jane may have died before 1831, I found the following entries which may relate to Jane.

10th February 1822 Jane Harrison of Bridlington aged 21 years
17th February 1822 Mary Ann Harrison daughter of George Harrison of Bridlington, Infant

I cannot find any further baptisms for any children whose parents were George and Jane Harrison.

29th September 1832  Francis Hopper bachelor and Jane Hutchinson spinster, both of this parish by banns.  Witnesses:  Elizabeth Hutchinson, Rueben Millner.
