Thanks J.J.

Interesting link that shows where my Great Grandmother is resting. Turns out our family spent a few summers just down the road from this location and I never knew.

Still trying to trace the name past her husband John E. Tingman Born 1 Mar 1863. 1901 Census shows he immigrated in 1890 and was listed as being from England.

Thanks Again
Rick

The marriage registration for John Edward Tingman indicates he was born in Southport, Lancashire and his parents were James and Elizabeth Tingman.

The Southport, Christ Church, Lancashire parish records indicate John Edward Tingman, son of James and Sarah Elizabeth Tingman was baptized on 3 Jun 1866.

The 1881 England census for Birkdale, Lancashire has the following family:

James Tingman, 66, born Scotland, general agent
Sarah E. Tingman, 61*, born Guisborough, Yorkshire
Frances J. Tingman, 22, born Australia
William A. Tingman, 12, born Birkdale, Lancashire
Robert Tingman, 10, born Birkdale, Lancashire
*There is an "X" over her age. It could be 61 but it looks a little like 51 to me.

On the 1871 England census in Birkdale, Lancashire:

James Tingman, 55, born Scotland, accountant
Sarah E Tingman, 41, Guisborough, Australia
Mary E Tingman, 15, Melbourne, Australia
Francis J Tingman, 12, Gisborne, Australia
Henry H Tingman, 10, Big Hills, Australia
John E Tingman, 5, Southport, Lancashire
William A Tingman, 2, Southport, Lancashire
Robert Tingman, Under 1 Month, Southport, Lancashire
Lydia Turner, 13, born Newburgh, Lancashire, domestic servant

There is a marriage for a James Tingman and Sarah Elizabeth Walker in 1854 in Victoria, Australia that seems to fit this family.

It appears the family returned to Australia as there are deaths in the Australia Death database that match.

I can't find passenger lists for John coming to Canada. It is possible he may have left Canada and then returned since we seem to have him in Canada on the 1881 Canada census but he gave his immigration date as 1890 later.

Thanks Jacquie,

I found James and Sarah (Nee Walker) and used that to trace back to his father John Tingman born in Fife Scotland in about 1785. I also found the same John in three 1841 through 1851 Census so I know he lived a long life for the times. It gets thin from there. I did find one note listing his father  as John Tingman II but I'm not sure of the validity.

I appreciate the other information as it it helps fill in some blanks.

Best regards Rick in Canada.

Hi! I just found this site. I read this with big interest.  I am from Sweden (North Europe) and in Sweden there is only one Family with the name Tingman. But as i read here it seems your family line comes from Scotland/Australia. Think maybe we are not related but sure it is interesting, it is a rare name.   best regards Gustav.
