date and age 'locket man' please
« on: Monday 16 February 09 16:59 GMT (UK) »
I found this when clearing out the family home. The front of the locket was missing and the photo is very small and the worse for wear. I am assuming it is one of my maternal great-grandfathers and a date and age might help decide as one was born 1838 and the other 1869.

Thanks

Looks like he's wearing a tie so that would make it  the latter.

When did ties come in then?

I'm not altogether convinced it's Fred (1869) - I do have some better photos of him, but only as a young man and an older man. 'Locket man' doesn't seem enough like him. (As far as it's possible to tell)
I think Fred has a longer forehead and chin.

Thanks for the attempt to clean him up Xin, I think maybe he's beyond help.

I found hundreds of family photos in the house (a family historians treasure trove but none labelled  >:(  )
Amongst them was a very large framed picture of an older man with scythe in hand who could possibly be locket man. I reckon he must have been a fairly close family member to have a large hanging picture in the house but he's definitely neither Fred (1869) nor Thomas (1838).

I've suitably cropped and posted both of them for comparison - I know the picture of Fred was taken whilst he was living in London so that dates it before 1901.
I have no idea when the mystery gardener was taken and sorry about the quality but I had to photograph him in his frame.

Can anyone help here please?

I think I meant 'locket man' has a longer forehead and Fred has a longer chin.  ;D

Ties as we know them today became fashionable late 1880's.
It isn't Fred as his hair is parted on the other side.Fred is wearing
formal daywear which was quite common over a long period so in
order to give accurate dates we need to see all of it rather than the
adjusted ones you've put up,also if you want them restored you need
to scan them at least 300dpi.

I can give you the full length picture of Fred but my Mum has custody of all the original photos so I can't scan him in again. Had I realised at the time that this kind of help existed on Rootschat I would have spent more time scanning all the photos. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I only have the photo I took of the large framed picture of the unknown gardener, taken from an angle to cut the reflections down. (Mum still has that one too.)

Thanks for your help

William & John Stuart traded from this address from 1893-1911.
His formal daywear with different style trousers was a feature of the 1890's.
The card stock is also typical 1890's but did carry over to 1900's.
The plain backdrop was becoming a feature in 1900's.
So late 1890's-early 1900's is about as close as I can get.

Thanks  for all the background info Jim

The dating fits well with when Fred lived in London.
I suppose there just isn't enough detail in the locket man to accurately pin him down as to age and date?
