Worksop Primitive Methodists
« on: Tuesday 17 February 09 14:46 GMT (UK) »
I've read in a Gazetteer that there was a Primitive Methodist Chapel in Worksop from 1832. Does anyone know its address, whether it is still there, and where its records are kept? I'm interested in registers between 1832 and 1837.

Hi raf,
I haven't managed to find out where they are held.
However, if you send this person an email they should be able to tell you, as they've obviously used them in their research.

Hopefully they know where they are held in this country.
Hope this helps a little.
Paulene :)

Hi Richard,

It's been puzzling me as to why we couldn't find where the registers are held. And, I think I might have hit upon the reason:
The Worksop circuit was formed in 1906, after having previously been part of the Retford circuit since 1863.  The membership consisted of Worksop Zion (75), Hodthorpe (40), Eastgate Mission (12) and Creswell (6).  Development at Hodthorpe owed much to John Harrop, Adin Davis, William Snell, Tom Harris and John Smith among others.

So, having read, that I again looked on the Notts Archives Catalogue list and found that they have the records for Worksop (Zion)
Primitive Methodist Church from 1906. It looks as if the registers for previous years might be listed in the Retford circuit registers. But, I don't know for certain.

If you contact the Notts Archives (a very friendly lot) I'm sure they will tell you for certain.

Hope this helps - let me know if they do!

Hi Paulene

The last link you gave me identifies the address of the PM chapel as Newgate Street, so armed with that, I'll contact Notts Archives and let you know how I get on in due course.

Many thanks
Richard
