« on: Saturday 21 February 09 07:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi Scotlanders!!!

I was wondering if some lovely person could possibly look up a birth for me
His name is William McNeish and was born in abt 1875 Ayrshire, Beth.

I particularly want to know his parents name if  possible!

any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you so much

Sue

Hi Sue

Nope can't do it for you....but can show you how you can do it for yourself....at no cost even!!!

Not sure if you've tried finding him before.  If you have and failed then perhaps you were not using wildcards to broaded your search for him.   And if you've never tried before then here comes your lesson on how to do it!!

Since I have no idea if the one result that is there is for certain your fellow or not it will truly be up to you to determine if you want to spend the 5 credits or not!!!

Ok...so here goes.  First read the post here:  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,353206.0.html and follow the directions to obtain 10 credits on SP.  If you don't have an account then you'll have to establish that first.

Now armed with your 10 credits run a search using the following criteria:

Search in Births 1855-2006 Category
Enter the Surname as M*cN*h (* stand in for missing letters)
Do not tick the Soundex box
Enter the Forename as William
Enter the Sex as Male
Enter the Year Range from 1870 to 1880
Enter the County as AYR
Do not select a district...leave it as All Districts
Click Search

There will be just one result.  Use one credit when you click on the result to see where it is and just how the name is spelt.

It will look like this:
1 1875 MCNINCH WILLIAM M BEITH /AYR 581/00 0015

Now based on this being in Beith and in the year 1875 even though the spelling is not what you were hoping for I'm getting a strong feeling it could be your fellow.  If you think it is then spend 5 more credits and the image is yours to view, download, and save to your hearts content!

Best wishes
Jean
