Gadd Family, Nantwich?
« on: Saturday 21 February 09 13:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am seeking the Gadd Family. The earliest ancestors I have are William Gadd = Harriet ??.

On the 1851 Census there is Robert Gadd (uncle of deceased William) living with Harriet and her children: Maria, Robert and Louisa.

He was apparently b. 1774 in Cheshire: Nantwich.

I have found his marriage to Hannah Cowgill on 25 Dec 1804 at Cathedral, Manchester but she pre-deceased him. Can't find him on the 1841 either  :-\

Can anyone help?

Hi Matt,

The Nantwich parish registers are online here (up to 1871): http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/

There is no sign of a baptism for Robert GADD there or in any of the other parishes covered by this project (tried GAD as well).  There are also very few GAD/GADD marriages on the Cheshire indexes.

The parish register entry for the marriage of Robert to Hannah COWGILL may give you witnesses which you can follow up - but the parish clerks often acted as witnesses.

I'll see if there is anything else I can think of.  Are you certain of the marriage of Robert and Hannah?  Who is Philadelphia.....?  :)

A Robert Gadd married Hannah Cowgill on 25 Dec 1804 at Manchester Cathedral.
A Robert Gadd married Philadelphia Lees on 27 Dec 1804 at    "                 "         .

1841 census (HO107/576/8/35/12) shows a Philadelphia Gadd, aged 65, living with Robert and two other family units on George Leigh Street, Ancoats. Both born in county?

The 1851 Census (sorry i haven't a ref) shows
Harriet Gadd aged 40 and her two children (i think) and also Robert Gadd, a pauper bricklayer from Cheshire Nantwich. Again this is on George Leigh Sreet.

Philadelphia died in 1846.

But where was Robert born? It must have been Manchester... there are a host of Gadd's living Manchester in 1841.

And when was William (who married Harriet) born/baptized? He is not on any censuses because he died in 1837 (there is a William Gadd d. 1837 on the Free Bmd). And how can I find out when he married Harriet? There is no marriage of William Gadd on the IGI ...

I have been stuck on this one for ages... where do I go.. what can I do to go backwards?

Thanks
Matt

Hi Matt,

Ref for 1851 is HO107 2225/297 Page 6, 58 Geo Leigh Street, Ancoats:

Harriet GADD, Head, W, 53, Fustian Cutter b Lancs Salford
Robt GADD, Son, U, 21, Picker Maker b Lancs Manchester
Louisa GADD, Dau, U, 14, Womans Cap Maker b Lancs Manchester
Robt GADD, Uncle, Wid, 77, Pauper Bricklayer b Ches Nantwich

1841, HO107 576/8/33 Page 8, Geo Leigh Street, Ancoats:
Harriet GADD, 40, Fustian Cutter, Y
Maria GADD, 20, Y
Robt GADD, 10, Y
Louisa GADD, 4, Y

Baptism of Louisa at Manchester Cathedral 25 Dec 1836 shows parents as William (Fustian Cutter) and Harriet of Manchester.

I think that the key is to find the marriage of William and Harriet.  As she was born in Salford according to the 1851 (is this consistent in 1861?) that may be where the marriage took place.  It might be worth a separate post on the Lancashire board to see what records are available.

There is also this:
Baptism William GADD 12 Aug 1793 Gravel Lane Wesleyan Methodist, Salford born 8th June 1793 parents John GADD & Hannah - there are a number of other GADD children to the same parents.

The death certificate might help as it should give you William's age at death which would help to pinpoint him, however I can't see a death in the right area in 1837 on freebmd -  where have you found it?

Sorry my notes were taken ages ago by someone I knew before I was old enough to start Rootschatting and searching my family history...

So he died between 25 Dec 1836 and 31/6/1837. 6 month time frame.

Children of Harriet and Robert Gadd
MARIA 6/6/1819 >> Marr James Reynolds at Cathedral, 3 Aug 1851>> Ended up at Manchester Workhouse, Crumpsall. She died in 1873 aged 54.
HANNAH 15/9/1822
ROBERT 9/5/1830 >> Married Ann Coffin at Cathedral, 12 Mar 1855>> my downline
LOUISA 25/12/1836

Hannah must have died befre 1841 - she is not included on any censuses.

How did you find William?
We need to find Harriets maiden name and their marriage don't we...

Hi Matt,

The baptism of William GADD is on the IGI - sorry, forgot to put the source down - batch is C086721.

I'd say the William could have died anytime after Louisa's conception during 1836.  However the Lancashire OPC site has a full transcription of Louisa's baptisms which would suggest that he was alive when she was baptised although this is not conclusive.

Yes, you need the marriage - pity Louisa was born just before registration began.  I'd start with Salford as they usually married in the wife's home parish.  The older children don't seem to be baptised at the Cathedral (Collegiate Church) so maybe there is a link to Salford.
