Help needed to date two family portraits!
« on: Saturday 21 February 09 15:33 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I thought that I would throw these two images your way.

I was going through an old photograph album belonging to an (now late) great aunt who had been helping me with my research into the family and hidden at the back of the album was a negative for two photos. The negatives were clearly made from the photos but after having the shots developed, I ended up with two great pics.

I'd like to know, from your estimates, when you think they were taken.

I can only speculate who they are of (i think i ~know~, looking at some later
photos of ancestors).

Woman 1 http://www.flickr.com/photos/familytreeuk/262952393/

Woman 2 http://www.flickr.com/photos/familytreeuk/262952392/in/photostream/

The Man http://www.flickr.com/photos/familytreeuk/262952387/in/photostream/

Woman 1 and The Man, are likely to be related - i think they are early photos of my gt gt gt grandparents.

The Woman 2, was introduced to me as 'Aunt Tingey' but no idea who she might really be. This photo was card mounted, without date, but I reckon it's around 1880/90s.

I'd love to know what you think  :)

Hi Andrew...As you haven't had any dating advice yet which is unusual given the wealth of knowledge by our dating experts on here...might I suggest that you change the subject line of this thread to..."Help with dating Please"...or something similar as the current title doesn't show what you require.
At least this will bring it back up to the top of the board ;D ;D
Good Luck!

Hi Andrew  :D

I'm normally late to dating topics because I'm asleep while all you folk back in the Old Dart are posting your pics!  ;D

The photo of Aunt Tingey would be from the 1870s I would think.  The other two are more difficult, as we don't have the original appearance of the photograph to help us.  At a guess I'd say 1870s for them, too, or possibly late 1860s.

Don't forget than an Aunt can be pretty much anyone!  When I was growing up we had several 'aunties' who were not related to us, but were friends of our parents or grandparents.

Cheers
Prue

Thanks Prue, yes, you're right about the Aunt factor. I have a few 'aunts' who are actually my grandmother's friends (she was an only child).

In looking for 'Aunt Tingey', from the family records that I have, i'm not sure there could be an Aunt Tingey... oh well. i just love the photo.
