Maybe Thomas lived with his wife and kept Isabella going completely on the side?!? Did you see the episode of the Victorians on BBC1 last weekend? Apparently keeping a mistress in her own home wasn't that uncommon.

Pleased I could help, I know how frustrating it is when you hit a brick wall with your family tree. I have to opposite problem with mine that some of the surnames are unusual so get written all sorts of strange ways, so they can be a complete mare to find on censuses!
